Hi!

Has anyone ever disassembled an injector pump themselves and replaced the seals? Mine are worn out after 140,000 km, thanks to RME fuel.

'There's now a leak at the flange joint between the pump and the pump head. Unfortunately, Mr. Etzold states in the book 'This is how it's done' that you shouldn't remove the head because 'otherwise the head will become misaligned and the distributor piston will break.'

How does the friendly, reputable workshop do it?

Regards,
Arthur.

Hello,

As far as I know, Marko (with a 'k') once removed the distributor.
It was a lot of fun back then icon_mrgreen.gif.

I haven't personally removed a distributor head from a VP37 engine yet.
The poetry itself is quite affordable, but the exchange process isn't straightforward.

The local repair shop doesn't do that either. They send the pump to Bosch and get a replacement pump (which is expensive).

Best regards, Rainer.

Hi!

Yes, yes, feel free to laugh at me... icon_smile.gif

Everything seems to be working properly again!

But I can confirm one thing: It requires prior knowledge, it needs diagnostic software, and it cannot be used in an incomplete or undeveloped state!

If you're planning to continue, please do so, but read first!

Best regards: Marko

Hi!

No, quite the opposite!

My problem back then was simply: "Now I'm faced with a pile of shattered pieces."
Hättest Du nicht weiter geschrieben, hätte ich ein besch.... PI had a problem.
When I finished that thing back then, I only had 3 crosses left to do.
I had taken the thing apart and put it back together three times because I couldn't believe that the adjustment of the control slider could have such a big impact...
Therefore, the recommendation is: do not proceed without a diagnosis.
Everything else is just luck.

I may not have learned it myself, but I'm glad I figured it out on my own so I can help others.

'That's why I'm also asking if anyone has done this before. I just don't want to waste Bosch 500 oil by putting it in the engine if I might be able to achieve the same result by doing it myself.'

I don't have the software, but I can have the workshop adjust it. It's probably still cheaper than buying a new or replacement pump.

That's why I'm also hoping for helpful information icon_biggrin.gif.

Okay, so, when it's installed, the vinegar smell is acceptable. Then I'll take the time to remove this thing.

What else is important?

That would be a huge stroke of luck. I personally think it's unlikely that you'll find a workshop that has done that before.

Best regards, Rainer.

'Are you talking about adjusting the fuel injection? Any VW workshop should be able to do that. They have the software for it.'

What needs to be adjusted on an injection pump if you only remove the cylinder head?
'My ESP is also leaking, and I don't really see the point of buying a new pump for just 2 euros. I'm also considering replacing the seal myself.'

Thomas.

set up?
'In a close race, fractions of a second can determine whether someone wins or loses.'

and you have to reassemble the pump exactly as it was before.
Okay, so every part MUST be in exactly the same position as before.

and of course, nothing crooked or skewed, etc.
The clearance between the distributor piston is only 3-5 µm.

Okay, for example, I had a friend install a 12mm pump piston for me.
He was explaining that when assembling it, you always have to set the initial position of the control slider, otherwise the thing won't work properly.
Unfortunately, I haven't done it myself yet, but I'll have it explained to me when the time comes. icon_cool.gif
P.S. I wouldn't dare to try that myself without the necessary expertise icon_cry.gif.
Because if you make a serious mistake, you won't be able to get away with just replacing the pump.

My pump is leaky anyway. And if I can't put it back together or if something flies out and hits me, then I'll need a new pump anyway. But it's worth a try. The gasket cost me 3 euros. A new pump costs 900 euros. And it can't be that difficult. I'm not taking the pump apart, just removing the one cover on the right side. Everything will stay as it is for now.

Okay, but another question: If the ESP needs to be removed, the serpentine belt also has to come off. Do I need to completely remove the belt, or is it enough to just loosen it? Can I then remove the timing belt from the ESP? Besides making sure the relative position between the crankshaft and camshaft doesn't change, what else do I need to be aware of?

Hello.
Thomas.

There's a guide by Marcello on how to disassemble the ESP... It might be very helpful to you. It's located in the technical articles section.

Post19-06-2004, 23:28    Subject: O-Ring Replacement: Distributor Head Seal Quote

Hello.
'On my Ducato camper van (year 1988, 2.5L naturally aspirated engine, Bosch ESP, 230,000 km), there's significant fuel leakage near the distributor head after replacing the fuel filter and using a fuel system cleaner. Bosch wants €1500 for a replacement pump and installation (including a new timing belt, etc.).'
The previous owner only used biodiesel in the vehicle for the past few years.
Has anyone already removed the distributor head and replaced the O-ring?
I keep reading this:
Removing all the fastening screws will cause the head to tilt and the distributor piston to break.
Is there perhaps a detailed repair manual for Bosch distributor-based ESP systems?

HI!!

I haven't taken mine apart yet, but I plan to do so this or next week. You can't expect any support from Bosch. I've already tried. They don't seem to know the meaning of 'repair.' I had to listen to things like 'They're not competent enough for that' or 'Only trained engineers can do that,' and all that nonsense.

You can get the O-ring directly from Bosch. Depending on the workshop, they sometimes charge an outrageous 5€ for it, even though it should only cost around 2€. However, I didn't get the original O-ring, but one made of rubber. I still want to be able to use biodiesel.

Next week, I can tell you more about it.

Now I have a question for the forum as well.
Can someone tell me the settings for the start of the pumping process?

See you.
Thomas.

So, the Bosch service center here is repairing the pump. They have at least one person who can disassemble and reassemble it.

He called me the next day after I delivered it and said: 'Biodiesel was used in it, and it's completely yellow inside...' He's familiar with this; he sees several pumps like that every week.

'Here, you only hear about the VAG group saying, 'It's not repairable, it has to be replaced.''
