VW LT: Black smoke, poor performance

A friend has a VW LT van with the following problem. While driving on the highway, it suddenly lost power, initially emitting bluish smoke, then black smoke. Now, it's difficult to start and it's producing black smoke, sometimes also bluish smoke. Additionally, the engine has no power.

So, are there any bubbles visible in the clear diesel line?
Okay, try blowing some air through the filter line towards the tank (gently). Do you hear a loud hissing sound coming from the fuel filler neck?
There should be no pressure build-up in the line (which should have a cross-sectional area of approximately 5 mm).
At that time, the fuel level sensor was clogged with deposits.
