Best Motor Oil: Which Oil Is Right for You?

'Since my engine oil needs to be changed again, I'm currently wondering which engine oil is good. I've been using 10W40 so far, and now I want to switch to 5W40 (0W40 seems to wash out all the dirt, and then the engine consumes the oil like crazy). Am I correct in assuming that 5W40 won't wash out the engine, or should I stick with the thinner oil? Which 10W40 is a good one? The engine has 168,000 km on it, and the oil change is overdue by 1,000 km. As for the oil filter, it doesn't really matter which one I choose, right?'

I highly doubt that you're doing anything wrong by using 5W40. I've been driving my car for four years and 160,000 km, and I've used either 10W40 or 5W40 (whatever synthetic oil my trusted mechanic had available at the time), and I haven't experienced any increased oil consumption (no need to top it up during an oil change interval) or any leaks from any seals or shaft seals (knocking on wood...).

For my 1Z, I always bought a 5W40 full synthetic oil from the hardware store for about 17-20 euros for a 5-liter container. It got me about 140,000 km with the car. And the car still runs like a dream, and I'm still using the same oil. Today, it has 235,000 km on the clock!'

'I can't really comment on long-life oil, as I only use fixed-interval oil in my AWX (so not the 506 xx, but the 505 01). I have the same problem as you! It's always quite difficult to find something at a reasonable price! I once found a supplier in Westfalen. If I remember correctly, I paid around 25 euros for 5 liters of 5w40 oil that meets the VW standard 505 01. This oil was also listed in MichaelII's oil compatibility table! I think you can probably find that oil at a good price on the big online auction site! I'll also have to start looking again, as I'll need to change the oil again in the next 4000 km.'

I wouldn't necessarily go for the cheapest option. I trust the quality of the internal components of Bosch or Mahle filters the most.

Da machst Du nichts falsch. Die Marke ist eh unwichtig und durch 50601 bist Du gebunden an das 0W-30. Achte halt nur immer auf 50601, mir wurde schon mehrfach in der Werkstatt das 50600 in die Hand gedrückt (zum Nachfüllen), im Lager haben die da nciht so drauf geachtet. Ich überlege nun, das Öl zur Inspektion mitzunehmen, damit auch das richtige eingefüllt wird. Man I never know.

Which filter? Just look at the list that's next to it at the store.
It's more problematic to remove the filter without it looking like there's just been a shift change on an oil rig... At least, that's the case with the 1Z engine in the Golf III.
