Hello,
I have one or two questions for everyone who has a performance chip installed. What is the oil temperature like for you? Mine reaches around 120-130°C with spirited driving at speeds of 160-170 km/h.
According to my mechanic, this shouldn't be a problem. My friend thinks that an oil cooler would be a worthwhile addition.
How hot can the oil get during a prolonged drive under full load?
That's all my questions for now, and I'm looking forward to your answers.

Best regards, Steffi H.

'120 to 130° is probably definitely too high. I drive a Golf III AAZ TD with an aftermarket intercooler. I'm also about to install an oil cooler. While 160-170 [horsepower] is quite fast, it's still not in the upper range of the stock power output.'
Exceeding an oil temperature of 120° significantly degrades the quality of the oil and should be avoided. To my knowledge, even Schumacher operates his engine at oil temperatures around 80°. His engine is likely operating right at its thermal limits.

Hello,

Oil temperatures of 120-130°C under prolonged full throttle are not a problem and there is no need to install an additional oil cooler. Volkswagen allows up to 150°C with the appropriate oil that meets Volkswagen standards.

In meinem alten 1er GTI hatte ich trotz Ölkühler manchmal Öltemp. von bis zu 145°. Immer Vollsynthetiköl gefahren. Auto mit 240tkm verkauft. Kein Oil consumption.

So, no need to worry.

Hello Thomas,

What kind of engine was that?

Hello everyone,
'So, I recently had my car inspected. Apparently, the workshop foreman took my comment about the high oil temperature seriously and switched to fully synthetic oil; and sure enough, now the temperature doesn't even exceed 120°C.'
If things continue like this, I might actually be completely satisfied with it.

Best regards,
Steffi H.

Post03-06-2002, 20:45    Subject: Pirelli GTI: Michael II - A Classic Car Story Quote

Hello Michael,

My dearly loved Golf GTI was one of the last models of that series; it was a Pirelli GTI with a 1.8L engine and 112 horsepower, engine code 'DX'. It had been slightly tuned (throttle body and cold start valve from an Audi 5E, 276° camshaft, exhaust manifold, Gillet exhaust). It probably produced around 135 horsepower. I still regret selling it today.

'I currently drive a Volkswagen Golf IV TDI with a 115 horsepower engine and a PSI tuning module.'

Regards,
Thomas.
