Audi 80 B3 Turbo Diesel Tuning: How-To Guide

Good day.


I would like to know how to tune the old turbodiesel engine from an Audi 80 B3 with 59 kW/80 PS. Is there much to gain with just a chip? I heard that you can modify something on the turbo. What exactly? And how many horsepower would that add?

Hi Chris,

As far as I know, no chip is used in the engine; at most, potato chips are used as a snack during the mechanical modification of the fuel injection system (a different boost pressure control cone for the pump... ).

Probably just a simple pressure increase, maybe just twisting the wastegate rod... However, I don't know exactly how it's done on your turbocharger, so I'll leave the detailed descriptions to the drivers of similar engines.

You can find some really good tips at www.golf3td.tk. However, if it's the 1.6 TD engine with 80 horsepower, it probably already has a low-pressure turbo installed. Therefore, you likely won't achieve much improvement.

Hello,

Micha has already given you the correct link. These engines practically scream for tuning. With a few modifications, you can easily achieve 110 horsepower, and the engine can handle that consistently if you're not constantly driving at high speeds on the highway. With more extensive modifications and compromises in lifespan, you can achieve even more (140...). However, you should expect potential damage to the drivetrain (drive shafts, transmission). My SB engine in a Golf 2 has 460,000 km on it, uses about 1.5 liters of oil every 7,500 km, and runs like a charm. I've been running at 110 horsepower for 550,000 km, but the transmission gave up. Because it was already too short, I've now installed one from an AFN.
