Hello everyone,

As the TDI world is slowly but surely shifting towards common rail injection systems, I would be interested (and hopefully others as well) in a current overview of the cars driven by forum members, along with their total mileage.

Due to the likely lower average mileage of PD engines, the kilometer limits have been set lower.

Unfortunately, as far as I can tell, only one entry is possible, so please specify the "main vehicle" if there are multiple TDIs in a single household.

For context (in case someone doesn't know what to enter; all horsepower figures are without modifications):
Among the VP-TDIs, I include not only the well-known 1.9-liter engines with 90 or 110 horsepower, but also the 2.5-liter 5-cylinder and 6-cylinder engines.
The PD engines are the 3-cylinder models with 75 horsepower, and the 1.9-liter engines come in versions with 100, 115, 130, and 150 horsepower.
As far as I know, the SDI only comes with one power output level (64 horsepower).
Mechanical VPs are those with a cable linkage to the pump.
Gruß Ulf

Hi Ulf,

According to my Polo manual, there are at least 4 different types of SDI engines.

1.7L, 57 hp (DIN)
1.7L, 60 horsepower (AKU).
1.9L, 64 hp (AEF, AGD engines)
1.9L, 68 hp (AQM)

Best regards,

January.

I drive a Passat 35i with a 1Z engine, and sometimes at work I also drive a Touran with a 100 HP PD TDI engine. That's why I marked 'yes' (or put a checkmark) for VP TDI engines with mileage between 100,000 and 200,000 km.

Best regards, WarLord.

Hi ULF,

du machst dir den Autokauf auch nicht gerade leicht. Or? icon_biggrin.gif

But it also took me a long time to finally decide to apply for the PhD program.

Only the "all-inclusive" and "all-electric" options are complete garbage.

Hi Ulf,

Private: A4, 2.5L V6 engine / AKN code.
Professionally: Volkswagen Golf IV, 115 horsepower, common rail diesel (PD).
Conclusion: No comparison! Enjoy the VP44 and have fun with it.

Hello Ulf,

Hello everyone,

Okay, my Seat Cordoba had 68 horsepower, and when you really look at it, it was the most reliable diesel I've ever owned; it ran for 190,000 km without any issues or problems. Well, if you were to reduce a modern TDI engine to the technology of my old SDI, the result would probably be similar. The only problem is that the body of my Seat rusted away much faster than I could fix it. Conclusion: the engine was great, but everything else was... not so good.

Hi Bertil,

I just don't like buying "cats in a bag" that could have been avoided. I hope the survey also interests other forum members.

Therefore, I'm also looking at the ASV-Ibiza. Despite having a powerful engine, it still exists without air conditioning, and I'm sure I can somehow disable the electric folding mirrors and central locking icon_twisted.gif.

Hi Ulf,

You mean the ASZ, right?

Perhaps you should look for someone on the Ibi forum who wants an Ibi with the base engine but maximum equipment, and then you could buy together through a re-import the "Puristen" version with the base engine and manual windows (which definitely exists in the catalog, even if it might not be sold like that in Germany), and the ASZ with standard equipment. Then you could transfer all the parts from one car to the other. In the end, you would have an ASZ with "Puristen" equipment and a 1.2-liter engine with almost full equipment.

Best regards,

January.

"In any case, I agree with you. The problem your survey addresses is the extreme difference between the various PD development stages. In particular, there have been significant changes in the area of timing belts from the AJM models to the current PD models. These changes are not as drastic with the VP models."
You might get a somewhat skewed impression. Moreover, even the newer PD models likely haven't yet achieved the same lifespan as the good old VP models.
It's certainly interesting.

Hm, so the current 1.9 TDI engines in Audis (8E) have a maintenance interval of 120,000 km. icon_wink.gif That would probably mean they've reached the same point regarding the timing belt, or?

Hi Ulf,

Unfortunately, I haven't found any in any of them... I just read that there are manual crank window mechanisms, so they should be installed somewhere. However, I haven't looked for them specifically yet.

Best regards,

January.

Hi Marco,

Fun is of course very subjective... Could you therefore describe in keywords what you like better about the V6 compared to the 1.9 PD engine?

Hi Ulf,

GanDriving through the city at 1000 RPM, and then if you accelerate, it's only logical that not much happens.
I believe this is because the engine noise makes a difference; you naturally drive a V6 at lower RPMs compared to a four-cylinder engine.

Since I like to drive fast on the highway whenever possible, the V6 is a better choice for me. When you accelerate with the V6 at 200 km/h, there's still plenty of power left. By the way, I haven't seen any PD models that have outpaced me.

Hi Marco,

With 150 horsepower, it's already quite clear that you're reaching the upper limits of what's achievable with the standard PD configuration (without any modifications).

On the other hand, it also comes down to price: Those who can't afford a car with a V6 TDI engine, but still want a diesel with plenty of power, will likely have no choice but to go for a PD engine as a regular consumer.
Currently, I believe the Ibiza with a 130 HP engine and manual transmission offers unbeatable driving fun per euro.
