On my A3, manufactured in 1998, the steering unfortunately has some play. One can turn the steering wheel approximately 4-5mm in either direction without anything moving in the wheels or the steering gear.
This isn't dramatic, but at high speeds, it's a bit annoying, and you're always driving slightly "snake-like".
The parts that cause the noise are the interlocking square tubes between the 1st and 2nd cross-joint of the steering shaft in the footwell. These were already replaced once for the same reason, unfortunately, they seem to only last for about 30,000 km before the steering components become noticeably worn again.
Solution thanks to Michael II:
At position A3 before the frame number 8L VA 057 550, the problem potentially exists, after which there is an improved steering column.
Anyone who is also annoyed by consuming 1 meter more of road width at 200 km/h can mount a split clamping ring on the square tube:
Part Number 1J0 419 838A
Warning: Has the new steering column been installed, which starts to rattle slightly later? If so, the clamping ring will not fit!
One can then properly adjust the clamping ring, but this requires appropriate tools and a steady hand.
