Hello!
I want to install a 'Pumpe Düse' (common rail) engine (115 hp) into my Golf 4 TDI (90 hp, non-Pumpe Düse). Do you know if the gas pedal is the same, or if it's different for the Pumpe Düse? Also, I have a general question about Golfs with Pumpe Düse engines. Were these exclusively delivered with a 6-speed gearbox, or also with a 5-speed? I ask because I might be able to use the 5-speed gearbox from the old engine. Would I only need to change the clutch because the tooth count is different?
It would be great if you could give me some tips. Maybe someone here has already done a similar conversion.

Regards,
Thomas.

I know a guy who has an engine for you. Not me personally, but someone named Daniel (he might even be active on this forum).

From the "Offers" forum at www.volkstreff.de:

115 HP TDI "Pumpe-Düse" engine from a Volkswagen Golf IV, engine code: AJM.

Original mileage: 59,800 km. Always properly warmed up before use, driven mostly on long distances, and not overclocked.

Here are the components that are attached to/found on the engine:
Clutch.
- Control unit
- complete wiring harness
- Alternator, 90 Amps.
- Air conditioning compressor
- Air conditioning condenser with hoses and pipes.
- Turbocharger
- Catalyst
- Intercooler + air filter housing including all hoses and MAF sensor.
Engine cover.
- Castle carrier + 2 holders.
-2 electric fans
-... etc...

The gearbox is not included. (But I know a good source where you can find one.)
DRW, ERF, and EFF definitely fit.

While the engine is being worked on, it would also be a good time to replace the timing belt and change the oil. (It was due for replacement anyway!).
I have already purchased the original VW replacement parts for the timing belt change and would include them free of charge. However, I could also arrange to have the change done immediately, if agreed upon. I don't know the price for that yet (maximum €100).

I can take pictures of the engine as needed; here are some photos I took during the disassembly process.
Image 1.
Image 2.
Image 3.
The asking price is €2500 for everything. The engine needs to be picked up, but I can also deliver anywhere in Germany by arrangement.

I can also give you plenty of tips for modifications; I installed an ARL engine with 150 horsepower in my own car. That's why I'm selling the AJM engine!
The main problems with the ARL engine were its large intercooler and the limited space available.
That's why I had to buy a new castle gate opener, air conditioning condenser, and several other things for 1300 euros.

"These problems definitely don't exist with the AJM!"
Adjusting the engine control unit to work with the immobilizer is also not a trivial task.

For any questions or if you are interested, please send an email to: Dan.jel@[NOSPAM]t-online.de.
Sure, here is the translation of the text from German to English:

Hi Martin,

He's using that exact name (Dan.jel) here as well.

If you have Climatronic, you will need a 120A generator. The accelerator pedal is the same and can be reused. Otherwise, Martin has pretty much everything available.
The Golf 4 and the AJM engine were only available with a 6-speed gearbox. The AJM engine was only offered with a 5-speed gearbox in the Passat and possibly the A4 (B5), but that doesn't match what you have.
The old gearbox probably won't fit due to the clutch size.

'Doesn't more need to be replaced than just the engine and its attachments?'

I seem to recall someone telling me that the pump-injector models have a fuel cooler located before the tank. icon_rolleyes.gif

Otherwise, good luck with your baking. icon_wink.gif

Yep, first of all that, and then another pump into the tank at the back. icon_wink.gif

Okay, so the fuel cooler and pre-pump should definitely be the least problematic parts.

Did all VP models lack pre-charge pumps in the tank?
I've seen VPs with VFP before, but I might be mistaken.

Okay, so my 1998 ALH Golf 4 didn't have one... I think the V6 TDI models do, but please correct me if I'm wrong. icon_smile.gif

The Golf with an AJM engine and Climatronic system, along with the winter package, originally only has a 90 amp alternator installed.
I only received/installed the 120 ampere icon_biggrin.gif recently with the ARL.

'That's strange. The 120A alternator was always installed with Climatic air conditioning and an electric glow plug heater. I had it in my own 1998 ALH, and my friend also has it in his 1999 AJM.'

Well, then Volkswagen probably started cutting costs again with the 2000 model... icon_cry.gif

But with 90 amps, one should theoretically be able to make do, I managed it for over 3 years after all, and I even had a powerful amplifier connected to the battery. icon_twisted.gif

"The VW Golf (ASZ engine, production year 2002) with Climatronic and WITHOUT glow plugs (due to the "Dutch phenomenon") also has a 120A alternator!"

Holland phenomenon?
I already know that radios and other aluminum rims were not included in the standard equipment.

Were other parts also omitted in export cars? icon_question.gif

Did all VP models not have pre-feed pumps in the tank?
I've seen VPs with VFP before, but I might be mistaken.

Okay... some 4x4 models as well as VP44 models...

The VP37 typically operates without a pre-charge pump.

Holland phenomenon?

Were other parts also omitted in export cars?

For example, the glow plug heater, which the EDC still wants to control, but cannot because it is not present.
I don't know to what extent the alternator is affected. My ALH has a 90A alternator, but those are generally supplied without glow plug heating as standard. It's possible that 'Flying Dutchmen' might save on the heater, but still use the same alternator. Although they could also install the cheaper one...
Sometimes, even wonderful features like heated seats or side airbags are missing.

Hmm, does the 120A alternator also come with the manual air conditioning system? My Passat 35i with manual air conditioning has a 120A alternator.

Best regards, WarLord.

Hi,

"I definitely need to check what kind of starter motor I have installed, because it's missing the glow plug heater. It's just annoying having to deal with this, especially with the weather being like this; you really don't want to be taking off panels and things. But I suppose there's no other way to get to it, or does anyone have a clever idea?"

If the 120A Lima (alternator) is installed, but there's no glow plug heater, then theoretically, you should be able to run a 30A electric auxiliary heater without disrupting the overall energy balance.

Best regards,

January.
