Hello,

After a leak in the coolant system of my AFN was repaired at an independent workshop, approximately 1.5 liters of coolant were added (though it was that blue/green type).

You absolutely should not mix that with VW G12 coolant. Since I replaced my radiator in July 2003 (due to a collision with wildlife), I filled the system with new coolant (directly from VW).

Now I'm not sure if it was already this new G12 Plus (which is supposed to be mixable with the conventional blue stuff) and whether I need to worry about it any further.

Since when has VW only been selling the G12 Plus coolant exclusively?

---------- ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: ----------

I now know that the 'Veedol Anti Freeze' product was added to top up the coolant and is supposed to be equivalent to G11.

It must have already been the G12 Plus system back then, because they probably switched to it around early 2003 or so.

The new G12 plus is now available for all Volkswagen and Audi vehicles and can be mixed with other fluids. Previously, there were G11 and G12 coolants, but now only the G12 PLUS is offered!

G11 and G12 must NOT be mixed together.

G12 plus can be mixed with both.

(also indicated on the G12plus bottle).

Okay, please provide the German text you would like me to translate into English. I will only provide the translation.

Hello,

G11 and G12 must not be mixed together.
It's stated in every 'help yourself' manual and in repair guides.
guides.

Only why, that's nowhere stated! One is naturally curious. icon_biggrin.gif

Which chemical process in the two substances can, as indicated, ...
auf lange Sicht einen Motorschaden verursachen? Does anyone know?

Best regards, KAi.

<Half>

As far as I know, the substances tend to clump together and form a gel-like mass.

Sure, here is the translation of the text from German to English:

I'll try it out sometime; we all have them in the workshop.

It's typical Volkswagen with this kind of stuff...

Something like that is what the 'bean counters' should ideally prevent, as they are aware of the IQ of most workshop staff. The term 'icon_wink.gif' 'regress' is probably familiar to them.

G12+ is definitely the result of damage limitation icon_evil.gif.

Hello,

According to this link, the G12plus has been available since 2002.

Hello everyone!

Here's a question about that: How much can G11 or other similar products be diluted with distilled water?

I have already topped up the original coolant (the red liquid) twice with about a wine glassful of distilled water to ensure it doesn't fall below the minimum mark. Of course, the losses over 6 years or 110,000 km are not an issue.

But, beyond a certain dilution level, the antifreeze and corrosion protection properties will certainly decrease. What other physical properties characterize a good coolant? Does it bind dirt like engine oil?

Here's the translation:

'Second and most important question: How can I get good and affordable coolant? Are there universal specifications like SAE for engine oil? Can you also make your own coolant from a concentrate and distilled water? In the past, it was just decalcified water plus glycerin. I'm not really into these mysterious high-tech concoctions; I prefer transparency, even from a technical perspective.'

Thank you in advance for any comments you may have.
Best regards,
Holger.

Distilled water has no place in a cooling system. The antifreeze additives are formulated to work with tap water. If the coolant level warning light is on, it may even malfunction because the level is detected based on conductivity, which is practically zero in distilled water.

If the antifreeze is diluted too much, not only does its frost protection and improved heat transfer decrease, but also its corrosion protection becomes ineffective. However, if you choose a concentration suitable for at least -20 to -25 degrees Celsius (outdoor temperature), you automatically enter a range where the corrosion protection also works optimally. Adding approximately 30-50% is advisable. If you add more than about 50%, the cooling effect of the mixture actually deteriorates again.

Forget DIY projects; a major engine failure due to internal corrosion is not worth the risk. This stuff typically consists of monoethylene glycol or monopropylene glycol, along with anti-corrosion additives, depending on the standard. There's also a VW standard for it; the last one I knew about (for G12) was "VW 774D," but your engine's manual should specify which type is appropriate.

//edit: G12 Plus meets the VW standard TL "VW 774F".

Here, for example, http://www.startol.de/produkte_09.htm, there are foreign products with matching specifications.

"No distilled water? I really don't want to pour that chalky liquid from our tap into the engine; it will cause scaling. And with the addition of antifreeze, the gauge should start working again because it should become conductive again."

What kind of damage do you suspect from distilled water?

There are also some 'unskilled' amateur mechanics who have a low IQ.

Die Schrauberbücher, die ich bisher hatte, haben tlw. explizit von dest. Avoid water.
The apparent reason (I'm not a chemistry expert) is that distilled water today is usually just deionized water. The missing ions are then readily supplied by all available ion donors in the warm engine, and aluminum parts are preferred sources. Furthermore, the corrosion protection in the antifreeze plays a significant role in this process.

Approved antifreeze products prevent scale buildup and are designed for use with regular tap water. If you have very hard water, you can mix tap water with distilled water. BASF recommends using water with a German hardness level of up to 20°dH (hardness grade 3-4) for its Glysantin product.

Neither glycol nor corrosion protection oil are conductive.
How should the coolant warning indicator function?

There have already been problems with the G12+ and G11 hybrid models.

There was an internal communication stating that it should be avoided as much as possible to mix it with G11.
That was quite a while ago (around 2003).

Ich denke es wurde mittlerweile aber dahingehend umgestellt, dass die Mischung keine Probleme macht - sonst hätten wir bestimmt was gehört. Bagrees icon_wink.gif

Hello,

Just boil the water before you pour it in. That way, the limescale will precipitate out of the pot and not into the engine.

Hello.

Unfortunately, I couldn't find any information about this using the search function (three letters are missing to perform a proper search). Could you tell me what the status is regarding G13 and G12? Can they be mixed?
