Hey everyone, my Passat TDI 90 hp, manufactured in 1996, is acting up. Suddenly, it loses power, but if I turn the engine off for a short time, everything works normally again. This problem has been happening more frequently over the past few days. On my way to work today, I had to turn the engine off three times.
Can anyone give me a tip?
P.S. Fill up with plenty of biodiesel.
Mileage: 110,000 km, not tuned, needs another service (unfortunately, it's always so expensive), engine code?? I don't know where to find it.
Greetings, papatom.

Hello,
What is the engine code? How many kilometers are on the car? Is it tuned? Is the diesel filter clear (also check various posts in the forum)?
If the problem disappears after a restart, this indicates that the system is running in emergency mode.
As always in these cases (see many posts here in the forum), have the error memory read out and post the result here. Tschüss

It sounds like the mass airflow sensor (MAF sensor) might be faulty.
Just remove it and clean it with brake cleaner, or replace it entirely.

Hello,
Before starting to replace parts without a proper diagnosis, I would recommend performing a measurement run first. Tschüss

Thank you. After following your suggestions, I found the solution and checked all the hoses first, here is the culprit.
http://people.freenet.de/lehm/Schlauch.JPG This small, inconspicuous black thing, I'm not sure what it's for, probably it has something to do with the LLK, it crumbled, so I just trimmed it a little and reattached it .
Now everything is working properly again!
Greetings, papatom.

Hi,
The STG (charge air cooler) measures the boost pressure using this hose.

'Hey, my friend (with an AFN engine) experienced something similar... during the drive, suddenly no power. Turning the engine off and on again would temporarily fix it. After visiting about 7 workshops and having almost every part (which were borrowed, which I think should be credited to the workshop) replaced (like the mass airflow sensor, boost valve, etc.), it turned out to be the turbo that was completely broken! It was a pain because it happened about 2 weeks after buying the used car, and the turbo wasn't covered by the VW used car warranty! I made sure to voice my concerns, and now VW, the workshop, and we each paid a third of the cost... I thought that was a fair solution.'
Best regards,

Hi.
I seriously doubt that, based on my own experience.
In my 1997 AFN, there was a design flaw with a membrane diaphragm that was too small, which meant that once a certain amount of carbon buildup occurred in the turbocharger, it could no longer properly adjust the mechanics.
More recent TDIs have a larger, more robust canister that solves the problem.
However, VAG is unable to simply install the larger canister when there are complaints (which is completely straightforward).
Instead, the customer is sold a new charger – ideally, again with a small battery, so that it can be "milked" for money again after a few thousand kilometers, etc.
This is real service . Gruß Ulf
