Hi there.

When I disassembled the AFN engine for the first time, I noticed that there is no gasket provided between the exhaust manifold and the turbocharger.

Does anyone still have something suitable?

hello
I was also surprised that there was nothing in between.

Clean the surfaces thoroughly and assemble them carefully, if possible.
Tighten them evenly so that they lie flat and smooth. They are usually 100% leak-proof.

Why do you want to interfere? icon_arrow.gif Can't you just let it happen? icon_eek.gif

Hello,

There are special high-temperature resistant sealing pastes available for such connections.
I can't quite recall the name of the product icon_confused.gif, but I do know that it's not good to use for "cold" sealing surfaces, as it will never harden properly.

Best regards, Rainer.

Hello,

What is the exhaust gas pressure at this point under full load? It's certainly not particularly high icon_confused.gif.

Hi Christian,

"It probably depends on the scale... after all, the much-mentioned exhaust back pressure is located at the inlet of the turbocharger, and the pressure difference between this back pressure and the outside pressure is what the turbocharger needs in order to function at all."

And if you look at the power output from the charger (roughly 20 horsepower, if I remember correctly from a previous thread), then the charger will definitely need a few hundred mbar (or hP) of input pressure. icon_rolleyes.gif icon_question.gif

Hi Ulf,

A few hundred mbar ( icon_question.gif ) are not suitable for a metal pressure connection; in this case, a seal can really be omitted. At this point, it probably doesn't matter if an exhaust bubble occasionally escapes to the outside, given this flow rate. However, one could also ask why a seal is installed between the turbocharger and the downpipe. icon_confused.gif Perhaps it has something to do with the vibrations from the exhaust system. icon_question.gif

I just wanted to mention that my beloved Hercules K50-Ultra didn't even have a head gasket. It just had an O-ring to prevent the coolant from leaking in.

If everything goes according to plan... no problem.

Hello, if everything is as planned, as I already said, everything is no problem. With my second car, the 'Ente,' there's also no head gasket issue. Just apply a high-temperature resistant paste, like copper paste, between the surfaces, and it will be fine. icon_smile.gif
