Since I'm planning to buy a Passat, the question of what the differences are between the ASZ and AWX engines, when they were used, and whether there are any known issues with these engines is still open. It would be great if someone could answer these questions for me.

There used to be a list here with the MKB codes and the corresponding data. It would be great if someone could provide me with the link.

Best regards, WarLord.

hi,

AWX, 285nm, produced approximately until mid-2001, with a 5-speed gearbox.
ASZ 310nm, starting around mid-2001, with a 6-speed transmission.
AWX, maximum torque from 1600 RPM.
asz: asz (no translation available)
ab 1900 u/min: from 1900 revolutions per minute.

Everything mentioned applies to the Passat.

macken: idle vibrations, as reported previously.
awx - I'm experiencing idle vibrations on my car, but I haven't been able to diagnose the cause.

Which engine, I think, doesn't really matter. Both are common and should have relatively few problems. Of course, exceptions always prove the rule! icon_redface.gif

Hi, I drive a Golf with an ASZ engine (I know the engine is mounted transversely), and I haven't had any problems for 36,000 km. Sometimes, when the engine is cold, it vibrates at idle. My company's Passat (also with 130 hp, PD engine - I really need to look up the exact model code) also drives great and has never had any problems. It's currently at 40,000 km. However, what I've noticed is that the poor acceleration is much more pronounced than in the Golf, and I occasionally stall the engine when turning left (at the 9 o'clock position - meaning stopping and then restarting). It used to happen frequently at the beginning, but you can get used to it, and then it only happens in exceptional situations.

Okay, I took the Passat for an extensive test drive today.

Result: Disappointing how little power the 130 hp PD engine with 5 gears delivers. The 115 hp PD engine with 6 gears feels the same. My old Passat 35i with a 1Z engine (subjectively) felt more powerful, and a Touran with a 100 hp PD engine (subjectively) felt much more lively. However, it will likely be the 115 hp PD engine with 6 gears, as it has a nice equipment list (Highline with leather, cruise control, etc.). But, it's not normal for the Passat (115 hp) to not pull so well up to 160 km/h compared to the 1Z. I attributed it to a faulty mass airflow sensor (MAF). The salesperson (at the car dealership) said that it was normal (regarding the engine noise/power surge).

Best regards, WarLord.

I don't know what's wrong with the ships, but my 1Z and the AWX are completely different. Maybe it's the LMM or the boost pressure? Whatever it is. You should have a warranty, so the dealer should keep working on it until the car functions properly!

Well, maybe I should have just crashed the computer. I, however, forgot the notebook in my own car.

Regarding performance: The Passat with 130 horsepower and 5 gears didn't feel as powerful as the 100 horsepower in the Touran (assuming the turbocharger was working). Therefore, it felt slightly more balanced, but I don't need a 130 horsepower engine for that; the 100 horsepower engine could achieve the same. The cars didn't pull as strongly from the front, but the power was a bit more noticeable from the rear (the 115 horsepower engine pulled better than the 100 horsepower engine, while the 130 horsepower engine performed similarly to the 115 horsepower engine, which is likely because the latter two have the same torque output, given the 5 gears in the 130 horsepower engine). Based on this experience, I would advise against the 130 horsepower engine with 5 gears. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to test drive the one with 6 gears.

Best regards, WarLord.

I have the AWX engine with a 5-speed gearbox in my A4, and it's a really good combination. With the 6-speed gearbox, the lower gears are shorter, which means the engine reaches the ASR (traction control) system faster. Trouble-free operation for almost a year and a half!

It's also about the fact that the ASZ has more torque (310 Nm vs. 285 Nm for the AWX).

Hmm, my AWX had a standard torque of 330Nm. A scanned engine control unit (ECU) – presumably from an A4 with a 6-speed transmission – showed a torque value of 340 Nm.

Yep, but even the VAG-COM diagnostic tool showed values that were surprisingly similar.

Hello everyone!

Since my question sounds quite similar, I didn't want to start a new thread...
Okay, can anyone tell me the differences between the AJM and ATJ engines, and are there any known performance issues with these engines after approximately 90,000 kilometers (or 56,000 miles)?

Greetings.
C.

P.S.: Sorry for the spelling: I'm French...

LMM? Or have you already replaced it?

Not yet...
I need to thoroughly check the entire intake air system for cleanliness, including the mass airflow sensor (MAF).
TDI drivers from my circle of acquaintances told me that these problems mainly affect VP-TDIs: icon_confused.gif It seemed a bit strange to me, but I decided to switch to a new, more reliable generation of mass airflow sensors (MAF sensors) for PD-TDIs.
I agree with you, the engine must have gotten a bit weaker: Where I used to drive 210 km/h on the highway, I can barely manage a measly 180 km/h now...
I haven't performed the DZR test yet: I've only known about this (very reputable, compared to what you can find in F *praise!!!*) website since yesterday. icon_biggrin.gif

Regards,

C.

@joergs

'In Michael's documentation, it states:'

The engine vibrates/shakes when idling. The engine vibrations are noticeable throughout the vehicle.

Cause:
One or more injector units are out of specification and running 'rich.' The idle speed control system is attempting to compensate for the overly rich mixture by reducing the injection quantity to its minimum limit (-3.01 mg/H). The significant differences in injection quantities are causing the rough idle. Normally, no error is stored. (Only applies to AWX / AVF engines with 96kW in the A4 and A6 models).

Changes:
Type 8E20N4, starting from serial number 8E52A-132795 (AWX - engine).
Type 8E50NC, starting from frame number 8E92A-136686 (AVF engine).
Type 4B2064, starting from serial number 4B52N-055723.

Solution:
Evaluate measurement block 13 with the engine running at operating temperature and idling. If a value is significantly negative or at the limit (-3.01), all four injectors must be replaced to avoid repeated repairs. Part number: 038 198 073 (set of 4 injectors).

Sure, here's the translation:

'Note:'
Do not use PDE codes with the index Q or AN. For vehicles of model year 01 (without WIV), an additional 4 other pushrods, part number 038 109 451 B, must be ordered. To prevent damage to the swingarm pivot shaft after only a few kilometers, it is essential to perform a swingarm alignment using a dial indicator.
Please provide the German text you would like me to translate.
Bye.

Michael II

My father has the AWX, and it seems that the problem is currently with the AWX, not the ASZ.
Does Audi also cover this outside of the warranty period? (because it's a known issue).

Sure, here's the translation:

'MFG' is an abbreviation for 'Mit freundlichen Grüßen,' which translates to 'Sincerely' or 'Best regards' in English.

Oops! I'm hearing this for the first time! Try searching online for 'vibrations 1Z' and you'll find plenty of posts about it!

'I wonder if Audi will offer any goodwill assistance? I have no idea! You should inquire and, if necessary, put pressure on Audi. However, outside of the warranty period, they will likely only offer a certain percentage as a gesture of goodwill, which means it could be expensive.'
