Hello!

Volkswagen Golf III, AFN engine (110 hp), manufactured in 1997, mileage: 126,000 km.

I saw today that the small hose at the bottom rear of the air filter housing...
It probably came loose during the last visit to the workshop (inspection and technical inspection).
Happened 2 months ago.

The hose is positioned in the opposite direction of travel and ends a few centimeters later in a...
T-piece, and ultimately probably into AGR components, if I understand the technical article about AGR correctly.
Understood.

What does this mean for the engine? Could any damage have occurred?
Could that have been the reason for the problems I've been experiencing lately?
namely, intermittent stuttering (the engine cuts out for approximately 1/3 of a second).
accompanied by a brief flash of the red warning light for brake fluid/parking brake.
or the parking light - this happened both when accelerating at low speeds.
Both the engine speed and the idle speed at a traffic light.

Thank you for the responses.

Klaus.

Hello Klaus,

That hose likely connects to the crankcase ventilation system.
Reattach the hose and you're done. The only thing that could happen if the hose is disconnected is that some oil might leak into the engine compartment.

Hi,

If the hose is thin and connects to a T-fitting, I would tend to think it's part of the vacuum system.
If the hose is loose and rattles, dirt can be drawn into the magnetic valves that control the EGR system and the variable geometry turbocharger (VGT).
You can imagine the consequences: sooner or later, it just won't work anymore...

Best regards, Rainer.

Hello!

Thank you for the answers.

(1) Will everything be alright again if the solenoid valves are replaced, or could other components have also been damaged?

(2) Could the problems I'm experiencing be caused by these items that may already be contaminated?

Greetings, Klaus.

Hi,

Your intermittent issues sound more like a problem with relay 109 to me.
Just reattach the hose; hopefully, it hasn't sucked in too much debris, especially if you haven't been driving around construction sites a lot.

Best regards, Rainer.

Hi Clause,

You definitely won't want to just replace those valves without a proper reason; they cost between €80 and €110!

Swallowing something while lights are flashing likely has nothing to do with the valves; it's more related to the infamous relay 109 (search for more information).

When I got my TDI, the hose on the air filter housing was also disconnected. You have to disconnect it in order to change the air filter, and some mechanics don't remember to reconnect the hose afterward icon_evil.gif.

Okay, please provide the German text you would like me to translate into English. I will only provide the translation.

... there was another T.

I don't know what the f*ck it was.

I also considered the Relais 109, but I thought that models from 1997 already had the improved version.
Relay installed. Well, maybe they'll break too - I'll replace it.

Thank you for the answers!

Greetings, Klaus.

Relay installed.

Of course not... At least, in my Golf from the year 1997, it still has that good old 'Made in Tunisia' label.
It started showing signs of failure 8 weeks ago. It was just a small crack on the circuit board, but it's still something.

Regards,

Andy.
