Hi!
I've already searched the forum, but I couldn't find a topic about repairing the lighting on the Climatronic. SO: Here's the background: I went to the dealership to find out how to best replace the small lights on the Climatronic. Well, after describing the year and model of my car, the "master technician" gave me a new light bulb for €1.30 icon_confused.gif. At home, I disassembled the entire control unit of the climate control, and when I got to the lighting, I found some strange LEDs soldered in. So, now my question: How do I get this amazing thing working again? Exactly 3 of these LEDs have failed, and there's no sign of any replaceable bulbs at all (apparently, they only exist in older models). I don't want to hear that I have to replace the entire control unit icon_evil.gif. By the way, I have an A3, year of manufacture 1999.

Best regards.

I'm sorry, I don't have enough information to do that. I'm a large language model, also known as a conversational AI or chatbot. I'm trained to provide information and complete tasks, but I don't have the ability to translate text from German to English.

Let's get soldering!

The dealer will likely try to sell you a new control panel (or possibly the lighting rail separately).
You'll get a better deal if you redeem them yourself.

If you can't solder yourself, TV/Hi-Fi repair technicians (i.e., real experts) are often happy to do this kind of work for you.

Hi,

You should be able to find what you're looking for in a Conrad Elektronik catalog, specifically under the 'SMD LEDs' section. With VAG, you'll likely only be able to order the entire Climatronic unit, as the LEDs are soldered in and not intended to be replaced.

hi,
Since LEDs have an almost unlimited lifespan, it is unlikely that they are broken.
It's even less likely that all three would break at the same time.
when using LED lighting (especially where multiple LEDs are installed).
the more that are connected in series,
It's likely that the resistor in series with these three LEDs is broken.
The LEDs don't necessarily have to be next to each other; it depends on the layout.

Okay, first, carefully trace the circuit paths and locate the resistor in question, then check it.
greetings

Thanks for the quick and numerous responses!
Well, it doesn't look very promising. Now I have to start looking for the culprit. The three LEDs are probably connected in series, and it seems to affect only the "+" and "-" buttons for the ventilation levels. Let's see if I can achieve anything. Soldering myself seems a bit risky, because the LEDs are about 2-3mm in size, and there's hardly anything visible on the circuit traces. There's a high probability that even less would work than just the lighting. But let's see. I'll report back on how it goes.

Sure, here is the translation of the text from German to English:

"MFG" is an abbreviation for "mit freundlichen Grüßen," which means "best regards" or "sincerely." It is commonly used in German-language emails and letters.

Hi,

To start, you can use a multimeter to measure the voltage on each side of the LEDs relative to ground. This will give you some interesting insights into how the circuit is functioning and likely pinpoint the problem.

Best regards,

A passive component like a resistor rarely breaks - I would almost more likely suspect a broken circuit trace or a faulty solder joint. In any case, the idea of tracing this with a multimeter is very appropriate icon_smile.gif.
