Hello, I've acquired a used speedometer, but it has a mileage of over 200,000 km. My car, however, has only 147,000 km on it. I have an interface box for reading error codes, etc. The speedometer adjustment software is called ALFA8. I need to connect to the speedometer with cables, but how and, more importantly, where?
I hope someone can help me; I can't see the mileage anymore.

Delicate subject...
Firstly, the function of Alfa8 is highly controversial; in some rare cases, it works, in other cases, it simply doesn't work, and in still other cases, it has rendered the speedometer unusable.
Then there are programs like MM.exe (for Motometer tachometers) and VDO.exe (for VDO tachometers) that are supposedly just as 'reliable.' A major problem is also making the correct connection on the back of the tachometer. Nothing can be done through the diagnostic connector, as tachometers from the Golf 3 generation are not connected to the diagnostic system.
Perhaps you should read this link to understand what I mean.
For people with EEpromer, brackets, and similar things, this link might be interesting.
My tip: Professional speedometer adjusters offer speedometer replacements for the Golf 3 starting from just 50 euros. If I ever need to replace my speedometer (I'm still hoping to get one with MFA), I will definitely choose this option, as it's a reliable solution.
Regards,
Private.

I just don't know how to get to it. There are these two large connectors there.
My plug here has four wires.
1: Pin 1
2: Pin 3
3: Ground -
4: Power +
Which cable do I need to connect to which specific port?
I think the plus and minus signs don't matter, right? Do I need to use this interface box, or can I connect the cable directly to the laptop and then use the software? So many questions, and I don't know what to do. I hope someone knows the answer...

Okay, so far, the programs I've heard about involve connecting a cable directly from the laptop's parallel port (printer port) to the speedometer. The speedometer has a small socket on the back where you can see four solder points. There are NO contacts there. That's why there are often contact problems. You'll have to figure out how to get a good connection there.
For any further questions, please check the thread I linked in the CT forum. If you go to page 1 of the thread, you will find four pages posted by 'Tiefflieger.' It contains information about the pin configuration, a photo of the connector on the speedometer, and other useful information.
'Maybe you could post a picture of your cable sometime, so we can get a better idea of what you're holding.'
And please let us know later whether and how it worked out.
Regards,
Privately, he preferred not to risk exceeding the speed limit.

If I read this and see the ambiguities, I would advise against getting involved without the necessary expertise.
