Hello and greetings. I'm new here. icon_biggrin.gif

I hope you can help me with the following problem:

I own a nearly new (used) Lupo GTI 16v, manufactured in 2003 (1.6l, 6-speed), engine identification: AVY, with approximately 13,000 km, therefore still under warranty (1 year).

Now, I've noticed the following (I'm trying to describe it as accurately as possible):

when I shift into the next higher gear, engage the clutch, and accelerate, I immediately hear a strange noise for about 1-2 seconds.
(...collecting, or it sounds like there are some screws inside a metal can, and I gently tilt it until I hear something, or a kind of rattling sound. Sorry, I don't know exactly how to describe it), after 1-2 seconds, the sound stops.

in the workshop, they told me that it was normal, and it might be due to manufacturing tolerances... but I can't really believe that.
(Maybe they're just trying to extend the warranty period, or something like that)

Do you perhaps know more??? What could this be???

thanks, best regards, Clooney

* Hey! *
Do you also hear this noise when you're driving at high speeds and then take your foot off the gas? If so, the gearbox bearings may be worn. The best way to hear it is to take your foot off the gas at high RPMs and then listen, because that's when the engine noise is a bit quieter.
I wish that it's not the bearings. Because this usually means that the entire gearbox needs to be replaced. That would become expensive... icon_sad.gif

Good luck! - B_Man23 -

hmm, so far, nothing seemed out of the ordinary, even when the engine was running at full load... but I'll check it out today. Thanks.

sooo, I've checked it out...it's definitely not the case for me.
(high-pitched, and then from the gas... you can't hear it)

It's much more likely during acceleration.
(as mentioned before, immediately after connecting and giving gas/accelerating for about 1 or 2 seconds)...

It almost sounds like something (several loosely running gears or something) is rotating on an axle, and then suddenly, all of them grab onto it simultaneously...
ev. Do rubber rings stick together ???

Hello!

I can also offer you advice, or perhaps, provide some reassurance.
In my second car (a Fiesta 1.25 ltr. 16V with 75 hp), the rattle started around 80,000 km (the car was about 6 years old and, of course, out of warranty), especially when accelerating from low engine speeds.
Currently, the box has accumulated almost 115,000 km. The noise was slightly louder up to around 90,000 km, after which it became constant. I'm not worried about it.

However, I find 13,000 km to be very little, and therefore I would demand a full refund. Agree to allow a sales center representative to test drive your car!
I also received a new 6-speed transmission for my Passat (which made howling noises between 120 and 130 km/h).

Greetings

Rudi
