Hello,
A few days ago, I bought a turbocharger on eBay. The seller claimed it had only 32,000 km on it and was in very good condition.
Now it's here, and when I turn it, the compressor wheel occasionally rubs against the housing. A little bit of play is supposed to be normal, but this much play, to the point where the compressor wheel rubs against the housing, probably isn't right, is it?

I'm not very familiar with that, but I have to agree with you. While the wave is raised by the applied oil pressure, it should never come into contact with the housing. Are there any signs of wear or scratches yet?

You can't directly see the scratch marks, but it's definitely rubbing against something.
Has anyone ever just tried spinning one of those waves, just for fun?

Hi,

The VNT 15 on my AFN engine had approximately 1 mm of "play" or "clearance" on the compressor turbine. However, grinding/adjusting it didn't fix the issue.
I would like to return the charger.

Interestingly, the KKK (presumably a type of mechanism) on this device has absolutely no noticeable play or wobble, but it rotates (almost) incredibly easily.

Hello,
I've had several TDI turbochargers in my possession recently.
Almost all of them had a clearly noticeable lateral deviation, even though they were not defective.
Playing in the wave.
It also surprised me - I thought it was defective, but it's not.
When you press down on the wave, you often feel a slight friction.
determine.
If there are no noticeable marks on the housing - especially for used loaders - then...
If wear marks are visible, then nothing will be affected during normal operation.
'If something is grinding, it means the turbo is likely okay.'
then you can see it more clearly!)
Many turbochargers are mistakenly discarded due to this type of play.

It would be a good idea to check if the VTG adjustment is working correctly on your loader.
'This is the most common reason why the turbocharger ends up being scrapped.'

Hello Jason,
Could it be that you recently auctioned off a turbocharger on eBay?
This is my first post here, and you're bringing up exactly the same thing that the seller is trying to convince me of. However, that's very suspicious.
'But I'm going to take the turbocharger to a workshop that specializes in them. And since I work in a workshop myself, I'll also be examining and testing various turbochargers.'

Hello Schröderliese,

ich verkaufe keine Turbolader weder bei eBay noch woanders. I am reading.
I've been following this forum for a few months now, but due to a lack of...
'possessing in-depth knowledge (unlike many other members here).'
das Gefühl viel wirklich sinnvolles beitragen zu können. Dby pure chance.
I recently completed an internship where I worked with turbochargers.
I thought I could maybe share my personal experiences here.
contribute to the discussion on the topic.
'All I wanted to say is that a charger with a slight ripple...'
It doesn't necessarily have to be defective for a long time... nothing more, nothing less.
But I think I should probably let the professionals take the lead for now and practice on my own.
my passive role - that has worked perfectly well so far icon_wink.gif.

Hi,

Okay, I have to defend Jason. What he's saying is actually true.
"Various turbos I've handled so far have all exhibited a slight amount of play. Without that, the turbocharger wouldn't function properly and would quickly fail. The turbocharger shaft runs on an oil cushion, and that cushion can only form if there's a sufficient gap."
I haven't yet had a turbocharger in my hands that was completely free of play. You can inquire about the tolerances from the manufacturer.
If it makes a noticeable grinding noise, I would be cautious, as that shouldn't be happening. A slight resistance when turning is normal, but the lubricating film is missing.

Similarly (last sentence), the VNT 15 was in the AFN.

However, the KKK in the Polo is completely different: there's no noticeable play, and the wave seems to rotate with virtually no resistance.
Even when idling, there's already almost 0.1 bar of boost pressure.

Doesn't the KKK use ball bearings instead of plain bearings, like the Garrett? It's normal for a plain bearing to have some play, but a ball bearing should never have any play.

Just as the KKK feels, it could be... hopefully, I won't have received a loader from a banana series (= field trial, the product matures at the customer's site icon_evil.gif).

What could be the reason for using ball bearings instead of plain bearings in engines that rotate at such high speeds?
The boost pressure in the low-rpm range is definitely not significantly better than, for example, in an AFN or ALH engine with Garrett ball bearing turbochargers.

The pressure build-up in the low-RPM range is, in any case, not significantly better than, for example, that of an AFN or ALH engine with Garrett ball bearing turbochargers.

Lower friction, adjustable bearing preload, easier bearing replacement (maintainability).
However, I doubt whether it's worthwhile to compare the different engine concepts of the ALH, AFN, and ASZ in terms of turbocharger response. They are simply too different engine designs and performance levels.

@ Julian,

If the play in the bearing exceeds 0.1 to 0.15 mm, the charger should be serviced.
This value, however, comes from a company that regenerates turbochargers; perhaps you can afford to be a little more generous. So, unlike what is described on eBay, there is no perceptible shaft play icon_lol.gif because you would definitely notice this value.

Best regards, Manuel.

The bearing in my 1Z also has noticeable radial and axial play, but there's no grinding or scraping sound.

Ball bearings are not typically installed in standard chargers at KKK. When converting from plain bearings to ball bearings, the use of oil can be eliminated in order to meet upcoming emissions regulations.

Hi Thomas,

If you already have this kind of information, could you also provide a source for charger identification fields?

Then I would try to identify the model number on the label of my charger...
