Hello fellow diesel enthusiasts, I'm having a small problem with my Golf IV today. I was innocently driving to the store when, suddenly, there was a cracking sound from the driver's side door, and the window came down...
Of course, I didn't find it very pleasant that it's raining right now!
I recently inquired about a replacement part from VW, but they immediately tried to sell me a whole new door... That's why I wanted to ask if anyone here has had a similar experience and knows where I can buy this small white plastic part individually and cheaply.
I don't want to accuse anyone of anything, but the fact that this breaks over time should have been known to a VW engineer. It has to be intentional, especially to use a plastic part in that specific location.

Which specific plastic part are you referring to?

The window is screwed to a bracket, and this bracket is clipped onto the cable. This connecting part, which I'll call the window holder, and the cable itself, is made of plastic in my case. VW is trying to tell me that this part isn't available separately, but that I have to order a complete set that includes practically the entire interior of the door, at a price that makes me dizzy.
I just can't imagine why it shouldn't be available individually.

Oh dear... you've caught me off guard! I can only give you more details later this week. Theoretically, it's possible that, like many other things, it's only available as a complete package! Maybe someone here has already had access to AKTE before.
I just remembered something else: I think I have another one lying around from an old FH (presumably referring to a specific organization or place). But I can only be sure about that this weekend (I'm currently working far away from home). If all else fails...

Driver's side door, used for about half a year. However, there are also replacement parts available - at least, there were here.
I've seen some posts on this topic in the forum!

Here's a little tip...
In the US, Volkswagen offers a 7-year warranty on the window lift mechanism (because it is known that various plastic parts can break). Gruß Bertil

Just a small comment:
With a hand crank, it's difficult to apply as much force to the plastic parts in question as you can with insensitive electric motors... didn't the Golf 4 used to have cranks, or ? Gruß Ulf

Certainly, due to the frustration of countless car owners.
If you ever want to read a nice example of the misery caused by sequential elFH errors:

Therefore, my cars will have crank windows as long as it is somehow possible . Gruß Ulf

You're right... I've also had frustrating experiences with faulty CAN gateways in door control systems. Sometimes, it even prevents the door from opening. Then, try disassembling everything with the door closed, so you can use delicate tools and Russian ingenuity to potentially move the door open. That didn't work, despite many outbursts of anger and sweat. I ended up plugging in a 'new' door handle just to get the door open... damn electronics!

The window cannot be opened/closed.
Window falling down.
The window lifter mechanism jams and a plastic part breaks. After that, the mechanism becomes blocked. The entire mechanism needs to be replaced. There is reportedly an improved version available now.
In December 2003, VW introduced the following goodwill policy:
max. 100,000 km
Vehicle age | Goodwill / Customer satisfaction.
1. - 3. Year: 100%
4. - 5. Year: 50%
No inspection certificate required.
Refunds will also be applied retroactively from October 1, 2002.
Regards,
Manuel.

Sure .
Unfortunately, such things happen to individuals so rarely that the general public would start to think, "Do I really need this in the car?" and, as a result, a significant proportion of buyers would specifically ask for "no-frills cars." This is especially true for the gimmicks that simply replace one manual action with another (or a button press).
So, electric folding mirrors, automatic tailgate, and electrically adjustable mirrors -> Ultimately, I think it's just a display of how much money someone has (or had), to make life as comfortable as possible.
And because almost everyone drives around in a car like that these days, you need one just to "fit in," otherwise:
"Your car doesn't even have...?" Which basically means, "Get out of my sight, you pathetic creature, you're beneath my standards!" Gruß Ulf

And because almost everyone drives one of those cars these days, you need it just to feel like you 'belong,' otherwise:
'What, your car doesn't even have . . . ?' Which means 'Get out of my sight, you poor thing are below my level!'
Tstststs....in life, you always seem to meet the wrong people.
I can only laugh about the 'false headlamp' (FH) problem on the Golf 4 (12/9 . Those things were, besides the rest of the electronics, the only thing that never broke on that car. And my false headlamps are often used.
However, when I think back... on my Golf 4, the additional comfort features rarely broke down (except for a motor in the climate control system). The rest of the issues were always related to the basic equipment and some design flaws: engine, turbocharger, windshield wiper linkage, windshield washer nozzles, battery, thermostat, seat, power steering, etc. (Should I go on listing them?)
btw... if you think that, Ulf, you should also remove the power steering, firstly because it's 30kg less weight, and secondly, you'll have much better maneuverability when going downhill into a parking space.

It's something to consider - if you could reprogram the on-board electronics so that the steering assist disengagement isn't constantly flagged as an error .
Is there also a steering gear available for the 9N without power steering?
Seriously: Is the electro-hydraulic power steering really that much heavier (30 kg) ? Gruß Ulf

It's more likely a sign that you have the wrong car...
everything is standard equipment with me...without exorbitant costs .
