Hi,

Unfortunately, I couldn't find the answer in older posts. Therefore, my question is: What setting should I use on a VP37 when adjusting it on an AFN engine (using a timing light), if the pump cover (flow control mechanism) has been moved?

Background:

I purchased a second VP37 from eBay, and the seller apparently tinkered with the pump and couldn't get the settings right anymore, so he sold it on eBay. According to the description, the pump was working perfectly until it was removed. icon_rolleyes.gif
I would really not want to test the setting on the engine! icon_twisted.gif

I could find the measurements for you from my DIY book.
But I see a fundamental problem here: With the timing light, you can only control the injection timing. However, shifting the cover changes the amount [of fuel/air], doesn't it?
Or what exactly are you trying to check with the clock?

In principle, the engine should start reliably if both settings are correct. However, both the MSW position on the ESP and the injection timing have relatively narrow tolerances. With a bit of luck, it might work, but it involves a lot of trial and error.

Please definitely read my more detailed article about the VP37, especially regarding parts from eBay. The previous owner might have damaged the pump, and you'll be testing it until winter. In your situation, I would definitely check the correct position of the camshaft and possibly verschandeln the MSW (multiple sensor unit) at the same time; that way, at least something useful will have been done.

And: take your time.

It's possible that I misunderstood something. Until now, I thought that you could measure the piston stroke by looking at the indicator in the middle of the cylinders. Shouldn't this value also change if I move the MSW (Main Service Valve)?

Hintergrund: Mir ist vor einiger Zeit meine Einspritzpumpe gestorben. (Quantity adjuster: upper limit) Das MSW lies sich nicht reinigen und der RWS hing bombenfest. Due to a lack of time.
I removed the pump and installed a new one. The measurement of the stroke of the old, defective pump showed approximately 0.7 mm. However, the new pump has a stroke of 0.9 mm! (Despite this, there was still a slight loss of power, and I have no idea why!)

Due to the sluggish initial acceleration, I kept increasing the MSW (maximum slip wheel speed) until I reached the soot limit. Surprisingly, this limit was reached before the "bouncing" limit!

My thought was to simply adjust the MSW (mechanical swivel valve) using a measuring instrument to the value specified by Bosch for an AFN pump. Since all three pumps have the same VW part number, one is set to 0.7mm, another to 0.9mm, and the newest one is completely misadjusted.
I wonder what value actually needs to be achieved?

Have I forgotten anything, or am I making a mistake somewhere?

I adjust the start of injection by turning the pump, at least until the control system takes over. I'm confident that I can get it running. Ideally, I would like to be able to make the adjustments based on Bosch specifications and know for sure that the pump itself is working correctly!

Did you mean the MSW cleaning article? I will also re-seal the pump as much as possible. I just bought a VP37 seal kit.
What could the previous owner have damaged or broken? Surely that would become apparent when disassembling it?
How do I check the correct position of the cam? Or better yet, how do I know what is right and what is wrong?
