It's possible that I misunderstood something. Until now, I thought that you could measure the piston stroke by looking at the indicator in the middle of the cylinders. Shouldn't this value also change if I move the MSW (Main Service Valve)?

I removed the pump and installed a new one. The measurement of the stroke of the old, defective pump showed approximately 0.7 mm. However, the new pump has a stroke of 0.9 mm! (Despite this, there was still a slight loss of power, and I have no idea why!)
Due to the sluggish initial acceleration, I kept increasing the MSW (maximum slip wheel speed) until I reached the soot limit. Surprisingly, this limit was reached before the "bouncing" limit!
My thought was to simply adjust the MSW (mechanical swivel valve) using a measuring instrument to the value specified by Bosch for an AFN pump. Since all three pumps have the same VW part number, one is set to 0.7mm, another to 0.9mm, and the newest one is completely misadjusted.
I wonder what value actually needs to be achieved?
Have I forgotten anything, or am I making a mistake somewhere?

I adjust the start of injection by turning the pump, at least until the control system takes over. I'm confident that I can get it running. Ideally, I would like to be able to make the adjustments based on Bosch specifications and know for sure that the pump itself is working correctly!

Did you mean the MSW cleaning article? I will also re-seal the pump as much as possible. I just bought a VP37 seal kit.
What could the previous owner have damaged or broken? Surely that would become apparent when disassembling it?
How do I check the correct position of the cam? Or better yet, how do I know what is right and what is wrong?
