Hello community,

My friend's Golf 3 with a 110 HP TDI engine had some issues this weekend.
His life was slowly fading away.

At a speed of 200 km/h on the highway, the timing belt is...
torn.

'I have an A4 TDI with 110 horsepower, and for my car, the oil change interval is every 90,000 kilometers.'
Allegedly, the maintenance interval for the Volkswagen Golf 3 is every 100,000 kilometers. Is that true, or is it just a rumor?
Excuse? If it's an excuse, what's the best way to handle it so that...
Does the workshop cover at least part of the costs? (The vehicle was regularly serviced at...)
inspection)?

'Supposedly, a replacement engine would cost 4500 euros due to damage caused by a broken timing belt.'
Die Kolben defekt sein können. Ansonsten würde der 1600 Euro kosten? Sagain
fucked up?

Regards,

Michael.

For the Volkswagen Golf, it's also 90,000 kilometers.

It's impossible to assess everything that might have been damaged without having the items in front of us.

Quite a few things *can* break down, but it really depends on the specific case.

Okay, please provide the German text you would like me to translate into English. I will only provide the translation.

That means that part should have been replaced at 180,000 miles/kilometers.

The car was regularly serviced at the authorized workshop.
Can I attach a document related to a missed deadline? If so, how would I do that?

This price range for the replacement engine is what you can actually expect to pay.
'Does the severity of the defect depend on...?'

Regards,

Michael.

At a cost of €1600, it will likely only include a new cylinder head with installation. However, for €4500, the entire engine block is also included! So, if the piston isn't damaged, you only need a new cylinder head.

I don't believe a Volkswagen Group authorized workshop would overlook the necessary timing belt replacement. It should be included in every service plan and marked as completed!

It seems the next inspection was due at 200,000 kilometers/miles.

A good workshop definitely wouldn't let a timing belt run for more than 20,000 km.
or what?

Unless there is an inexplicable reason why the change interval is not 90,000, but...
100,000

Regards,

Michael.

First, let's address the technical aspects:

The price range for replacement parts naturally depends on what is broken. If the workshop believes that the pistons have been damaged (which they often are, after an additional charge for the valves), then the pistons should also be replaced.
I cannot say here whether and what exactly has happened.

Regarding the procedure.
It's always a tricky situation. I would first find out why the maintenance interval of 90,000 km was not followed. It's best to be well-prepared for such a conversation – perhaps gather information from another workshop. However, avoid saying something like "Workshop B says..." Instead, try phrasing it as "According to VW specifications..."
"Then they should explain why the maintenance interval was exceeded for a car with a service booklet. Even though it's over by 17,000 km, that's not much if you assume the first service might have been done at 97,000 km, which would only be 10,000 km over, and that's still within an inspection period..."

I don't think you'll achieve much with that.

I know a story about a VR6 engine that had a maintenance-free timing chain – the chain broke, and the manufacturer refused to cover any of the costs.

Regarding the subject matter: Your title says "...Partial Fault Workshop," but I'm sure you mean "...Partial Fault Garage."

Good luck anyway.

Yes, exactly. Unfortunately, the title line was not long enough; it had a maximum of 60 characters.

My friend wants to sell the car to a Volkswagen workshop now.
At least offer more than what's been offered so far (1800 euros).
Assuming a rough estimate of 4700, and without any damage from a broken timing belt.

Regards,

Michael.

Hello,

Here's a question on the side: How does a timing belt failure typically happen at 200 km/h (approximately 124 mph)? Was your friend able to calmly steer onto the shoulder, or was it more chaotic?

Disconnecting the engine might not hurt in a situation like that, right?

Ralf.

The engine was completely off.
I was completely exhausted and managed to get to an exit ramp and a parking lot with the last of my energy.

Apparently, he didn't hear any unusual noises, so it was quite unremarkable.

Regards,

Michael.

My friend left the car's maintenance booklet in the car.
obtained (it was already difficult to get it from the dealer).

The dealer ripped off my friend.
The service interval is 90,000 km, not 100,000 km as the dealer claimed.

The car was at the dealership with 183,000 kilometers on the odometer, and the timing belt had not been replaced.
Switched. Clear error on the part of the workshop!

Now the dealer is starting to take the box apart with a screwdriver.
If my friend is lucky, he'll get a replacement machine.
the price of a timing belt replacement... Let's see icon_wink.gif.

Regards,

Michael.

Huh?? What kind of dealer is this???

The car is his property, whether it's at the dealership or in the Aldi parking lot!

If a salesperson were to cause me stress because I want access to MY car, I would immediately push them out of the showroom myself and tell the dealer something about "embezzlement, §246 of the German Criminal Code." If they try to prevent me from doing so, that would add "kidnapping" to the list.

Well,

The Volkswagen dealer was just trying to cover up his mistake.
By the way, here's the name of the vendor:

Hi Michael,
I've temporarily removed the name so that your friend can have the engine.
is not denied on the grounds of defamation.
You can always reverse the change once the situation has stabilized.

Best regards, Rudi.

After the matter is resolved, it will likely be the last time he's there.

Two years ago, there was still a Volkswagen dealership named 'Honsel' in our town of Rhede, Westphalia.
He was a good man and always knew what to do. Unfortunately, they took him away.
The shop is closed due to the consolidation of Volkswagen workshops.

Well, everyone makes mistakes, probably.
