Hello,
The report on decommissioning the AGR states 'disconnect the vacuum hose.' So, a silly question: Do I need to disconnect the hose from the silver canister (the thicker hose with the crimped clamp) or from the small black canister? A thin hose runs from the small black canister to the air filter box and connects to a valve or similar.

Thanks in advance, Christian.

It's the hose that connects the two parts; which side you disconnect it from doesn't ultimately matter. However, it's easier to do it on the side of the pressure vessel (the silver part), as the screw is more accessible there (and the hose MUST be connected).

Best regards,

January.

... perhaps Chris was referring to the "small black box" as the vacuum chamber of the bypass valve? icon_idea.gif
@Chris: Guys... please don't just connect any random cables.
"Take a look at the function of the EGR valve; if necessary, remove it to see how it works. Then everything will be clear."

Best regards, Rainer.

AGR fits perfectly with my question again.

Can someone with a Multifunction Display (MFA) compare the displayed fuel consumption values at idle with a 'faulty' EGR valve and with a functioning EGR valve? Someone posted that the MFA would display liters per hour in stationary mode, is that correct? (Unfortunately, my 1996 AFN A4 doesn't have that feature).

The background is this: it's possible that, with low engine power, the EGR system could actually save fuel because 1. the exhaust backpressure is lower and 2. much less fresh air needs to be drawn laboriously through the air filter and intercooler.
What do you think of this theory? It obviously depends heavily on how high the EGR rate can actually be. I assume the highest amount of exhaust gas recirculation occurs at idle, but is it 20%, 50%, or something else???

Regards,
Udo.

The idle speed control values for the EGR control valve are approximately 66%, as shown by the test drive I conducted today. I'm still analyzing the data, but soon there will be very interesting images, including views of the EGR system, in the other thread, specifically related to the 50->100 test.

Regarding consumption:

Someone... uh... I... once heard that a faulty EGR valve could reduce fuel consumption by up to 0.5 liters. However, as I know now, this was related to my then-faulty turbocharger system. Since having the EGR valve repaired over three tankfuls of gas, I haven't noticed any increase in fuel consumption while driving. Unfortunately, I can't say anything about the idle speed; my Ibiza doesn't provide me with any information about that when the car is stationary.

Otherwise, you can also download my two files (from a different thread), which clearly show how the EGR behaved on my way to work icon_wink.gif. It's mostly self-explanatory, but feel free to ask if you have any questions.

Best regards,

January.

I just deactivated my AGR (Abgasrückführung). Hehe.

'It's quite a noticeable difference, I think... Considering how warm it is, it actually runs better. It doesn't smoke as much, and the 'jerking' after engaging the clutch is gone. When I shift up with pressure, it jumps forward each time, which isn't good for the clutch. The MFA (multifunction display) also shows lower values...?! But it couldn't have broken down, since the full-throttle performance seems to be the same. I still need to test it a bit more, as I've been pushing it pretty hard in recent weeks.'
By the way, after using the paper filter, it actually ran a bit better, but the beautiful whistle sound is no longer as loud, which is strange, right?

'@elto: So, have you also noticed less vibration? I haven't subjectively noticed any increase in power yet, but somehow the car feels smoother to drive...'

'Even with full throttle, nothing has changed, but tapping the accelerator helps you move forward much better. The MFA (Multi Function Display) now consistently shows consumption below 5 liters, which I initially thought was a delusion. Also, it accelerates noticeably faster after shifting gears, without any hesitation... it's really amazing... haha. And the Bosch service center mumbled something about engine damage.'

The best thing I could do (and I've been so hesitant for so long...).

greetings

Oh, so that's where your concerns originally came from...
I haven't been able to fully check my fuel consumption yet, but I think it might have improved a little... let's see!

"...that there are always some unscrupulous individuals. Of course, you will repair the EGR system as quickly as possible and not boast about your experiences. -> Tax evasion and loss of approval documents (ABE) due to EGR manipulation."
Always remember that having a criminal record can be very detrimental for certain professions (apparently less so for politicians).

Hi everyone!
Best regards to Rainer!

Could it potentially affect the lifespan of the engine?
I'm thinking specifically about winter conditions, when temperatures are below freezing?
'In that case, the engine would receive 100% fresh air if the EGR system were no longer functioning.'

It could possibly be icon_rolleyes.gif ???

Hi,

It's rather unlikely. One could argue about which is more harmful: whether the engine takes a little longer to warm up (my subjective impression), or whether it sucks in more dirt.

Best regards, Rainer.

Apart from that, there are also diesel engines that never had a DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) from the beginning, and they still don't break down any faster. icon_smile.gif

Hi!

You're absolutely right!

I didn't think about that when I posted it. At the time, my mind was just filled with fleeting thoughts, but of course, the engine burns some of the exhaust gases again, or rather, the dirt.
Perhaps it's worth reconsidering the decommissioning of the agricultural land reserve (AGR) once again.

I've also noticed symptoms like sometimes having more or less gas, and occasionally experiencing slightly reduced performance, but then it returns to normal.

Should we test with a decommissioned nuclear power plant? What do you think?

Aloha.
My starting point is something new.

'When you do extreme tuning, shouldn't you be worried that the combustion chambers might get too hot? My tuner expressed serious concerns... to put it mildly.'
The mentioned advantages make the whole thing quite appealing, but also a bit scary. Thinking about it, I'm actually in the same place I was before.*thinking*

Hello, haven't we discussed this question enough times already?
Read the first sentence in the AGR article. icon_rolleyes.gif
