Speedometer Sensor Location: Find It Here!

The speedometer needle on my 1997 Passat 3B TDI AFN (81kW) flickers within a range of approximately +-10 km/h when I reach the maximum speed.

Yesterday, with an outside temperature of 2°C, the speedometer completely failed (the needle remained at zero). Once the engine reached operating temperature, everything worked again.

No error was recorded.

I'm tapping on the sensor for the speed signal, the so-called 'speedometer sensor (G22)'.

Dieser soll am Getriebe sitzen. But exactly where?

Can this be easily replaced, or does it require more effort?

On the AFN engine, it's located near the shift linkage and is identifiable as the second electrical connector on the transmission - the other one is the switch for the reverse lights.

You'll have to check whether this applies to the Passat (e.g., if it can be installed lengthwise) or not.
