Hello friends,

I've used the search function and read a lot, but I couldn't find anything that specifically addressed the issue with 'my' car.

'I have the feeling that my 35i variant, even with tuning (around 130 hp), isn't fast enough (~124 mph), and the 1Z engine hasn't even reached the redline.'

What might have occurred to me is that the combination vehicles have a higher wind resistance! If that were the case, then I could understand it.

What makes me very uncertain is that, according to some forums, Kobis with comparable engines are supposedly running without problems at speeds of 210 km/h!

I can't stand it when my engine isn't running 'right,' and then I start tinkering around, looking for something that's wrong, even though there might not be anything there.

I would really appreciate your opinion.

Best regards,

Hi,

Have you changed the translation? Probably not, so your top speed will likely increase by a maximum of 3-7 km/h due to the tuning, if at all.

The reason is that the original transmission is designed so that the machine reaches its maximum power (Pmax) at its maximum speed (Vmax) - which has nothing to do with the beginning of the redline. While your tuning increases Pmax, it only shifts it slightly upwards. So, your car will reach Vmax faster, but it won't necessarily be much faster overall, simply because the power drops off rapidly at such high RPMs.

The speedometer might show 200, but the actual speed is likely closer to 190. Considering that the Variant often has a shorter gear ratio, it's quite possible that this is the maximum speed achievable.

With a longer gear ratio (or at least a 5th gear), you would gain a few kilometers per hour, but the effort probably isn't worth it.

Best regards,

Jan.

Hi.

According to the clever (but ultimately useless) book that came with the car, the maximum speed difference between the sedan and the wagon, with the same engine, is only 4 to 6 km/h. I attribute this to a higher drag coefficient for the wagon and also to its higher vehicle weight.
'My car's registration says the maximum speed is 188 km/h, but according to the speedometer, it reaches 200 km/h (and with a good run, even 205 km/h). I think 200 km/h is a decent top speed for a 1Z engine in a 35i. My father has the exact same model (completely stock, 90 horsepower), and it's limited at 190 km/h on the speedometer (not accounting for speedometer error).'

@ Jan:

Is it really true that 'variants' has a shorter translation?
Then only in fifth gear, right?!
It would actually make sense considering the higher weight. However, station wagon versions with identical sedan models consistently perform worse in acceleration and passing tests. So, they must actually have the same gear ratio.
Where can I see the translations to find out what specific model I have? I have a CYP transmission.

Hi,

"This is definitely the case with the Golf Variant (see Dieselmartin), and I suspect it's the same with the Passat (although it would make sense)."

The point is simply that the variant is significantly heavier, and that needs to be compensated for.

The GKB and other relevant data should be available in the specialized articles.

Best regards,

Jan.

Hi.

The Golf 1Z "usually" has the ASD system.

The Golf Variant 1Z and Passat Variant 1Z models have CTN.

Here are the differences:

Hi,

For the Passat, the transmissions are the same because the tire sizes are also the same (as far as I know, this is not the case for the Golf sedan and the Golf Variant).

http://www.dieselschrauber.de/GKB.html

Regarding the maximum speed (vmax), I can confirm your values. According to the speedometer, it's around 200 km/h on a flat road for a 3A5 (which is a 35i Variant) with an AFN engine.

Best regards,
Munch.

Hello.

In the technical article, my CYp gearbox is mentioned, but there are no translations provided icon_cry.gif. I would really like to know those translations (especially for the DZR).

slightly off-topic, but one more thing:
Could it be that a 35i Variant 1495 icon_exclaim.gif kg can weigh (fully fueled, including the driver)? This was recently determined on a scale, and the registration document states 1310 kg. That would be 185 kg too much. Well, I have a bit more stuff in the car than the base configuration.
- Climatronic
- Auxiliary heater / Standby heater / Parking heater
-eFH (front)
-eASp
- and a 20 kg subwoofer enclosure.
- Radio with CD changer, including cable, <10>180 Kg with that. It's possible that the scale wasn't weighing correctly, but it was supposedly calibrated just before. And according to the DZR (German Road Traffic Regulations), that seems plausible. icon_confused.gif

@ampac

I find a weight of 1485 kg for a Passat to be absolutely realistic.

My Golf 3 Variant weighs 1350 kg on the TÜV scale with half a tank and me in it.

According to the document, there should be 1195.

icon_eek.gif Damn icon_eek.gif,

What does my 'Kurzer' (1120 according to the documents) weigh then? So, the weight advantage I dreamed of compared to the modern PD bodies was just an illusion icon_cry.gif.

I really need to go weigh myself.

'My old 1Z was completely full of fuel, and including the driver and daughter (15kg), it weighed 1520kg back then. So, that seems about right. My current Passat 3BG weighs 1610kg with the same setup. Well, I guess the 3BG just has a bit more 'prosperity weight'.'

Regarding the top speed of the 35i: I had the 1Z engine with an exhaust system. According to Ulf's power calculator, it produced approximately 110 horsepower. However, the PDA navigation system only showed a maximum speed of 192 km/h on a straight road. I believe that's the absolute maximum with the 185-size tires and 14-inch rims. According to the registration documents, the car is officially rated at just over 170 km/h. Tuning only makes a minor difference to the top speed. Jan's figures regarding the power gain seem realistic, but without changing the gear ratio, it's unlikely to go much higher. I'm very skeptical about the top speeds mentioned in various posts on certain forums. I often read that people with 3B models and AHU engines (90 horsepower) claim to be exceeding 200 km/h. I consider that to be a myth. It might be what the speedometer shows, but only if the speedometer is inaccurate by 10-20 km/h.

Hi,

The translation is available in the link that I posted: http://www.dieselschrauber.de/GKB.html
If you want to do it the complicated way, then look for it in the Russian parts catalog (www.exist.ru), just like I did (at a time when the list wasn't yet available on the diesel mechanic forum). icon_wink.gif

CYP axis: 60:19
1.-5. 34/9 33/16 31/23 29/30 29/39
Return shipment: 18/9 x 36/20.

Regarding the weight, I can only provide the 1410 kg figure from my last vehicle inspection ("Pickerl" in Austria), which was likely measured without a driver (I wasn't present). The 1310 kg figure probably dates back to a time when the standard driver weight (75 kg) was not included in the calculation.

Best regards,
Munch.

P.S. Wasn't the Climatronic system, front electric windows, and electrically adjustable mirrors standard equipment on the Passat 35i models with the AFN engine?

'Hmm, our 1Z engine would often rev above 4,000 RPM on the straight (I think it even reached 4,300-4,400 RPM, which, according to the speedometer, was just shy of 200 km/h). It also had good torque across the rev range, and I think the AFN engine should be no worse.'

Best regards, WarLord.

Oh my God, sorry, I completely missed the link to the listing with the GKB entries. But thank you for the link. I only saw the mapping tables. Well, those who can read definitely have an advantage icon_evil.gif.

I've always assumed a DZR (German vehicle registration document) weight of approximately 1360 kg (base weight + extra weight), which resulted in a calculated underperformance of about 7%. With the new (actual) weight, it's only 2%, but I think this is due to the still problematic VTG (variable torque geometry), which sometimes doesn't properly regulate the load distribution. I have a larger canister available, but I can't change it because the adjustment screw on the linkage is rusted solid icon_mad.gif icon_evil.gif icon_evil.gif. Isn't this fraud, considering the (actually significant) difference in vehicle weight??? Or how does this huge difference arise? And what about the maximum payload? From which value should one now assume it? Is it a matter of appearance or actual weight icon_evil.gif? So many questions...
icon_question.gifP.S. Wasn't the Climatronic, electric front windows, and electrically adjustable mirrors standard equipment on the Passat 35i models with the AFN engine?
As far as I know: No, but AFAIK, at least in the special model 'PACIFIC', the eFH (front) and elASp were standard. I don't think that depended on the engine code (I've seen AFN engines without all that extra equipment, and they're probably quite light ).icon_confused.gif

So, what about the maximum payload? What value should one actually expect? Should one rely on the sticker or the scale? icon_question.gif

Payload = Permissible gross vehicle weight (as stated on the vehicle registration document) - Actual unladen weight. There's absolutely nothing you can do about it, even if your actual unladen weight is significantly higher than what's stated.

Payload = permissible gross weight according to the document - actual empty weight. There's definitely nothing to argue about here, even if your actual empty weight is significantly higher than stated.

That would mean that with a maximum payload of 450 kg, on a vacation trip, for example, with 4 people on board (approximately 80 kg per person, including the driver), there would be almost no room left for luggage icon_eek.gif?!
