Parking Heater Smoking: Troubleshooting & Fixes

My Termo Top Diesel, manufactured in 1995, smokes heavily when I start it, to the point where it looks like the whole car is on fire. It also struggles to start. Once it's running, the smoking stops after about 5 minutes. What could be the cause? Does anyone have a repair manual for this kind of issue? I would appreciate it.

Hi,
First, the usual disclaimer regarding the diagnosis, as far as it was already implemented in version 95.
Most likely, first, the heating system is completely full of soot and ash internally, and second, the filter material is worn out, which means a new combustion chamber is needed. The work itself is simple; it's just a matter of opening it up and screwing things together. The screws are T15, and one of them is located a bit deeper.

The water that had seeped in turned into enormous amounts of smoke.

At the repair shop, they tried (unsuccessfully) to fix it with a new set of seals.

I had a Webasto auxiliary heater installed in a Volvo 265 DL many years ago.
It was leaking; the antifreeze in the coolant was smoking excessively!
Water only creates 'steam.'
