Hello everyone,

"Since yesterday, I've noticed a scraping/squeaking noise on my Golf. It's only audible with the window open. It's also present when the car is rolling without the engine running, and it remains constant when braking or turning, regardless of how hard I brake. The frequency of the noise is relatively independent of the car's speed and only stops when the car is stationary. It sounds almost like a metal part is scraping on the road underneath the car. Of course, I immediately checked, but I didn't find anything. Once the car is warmed up, the noise disappears." It's starting to get cold again.

My suspicion now points towards the drive shafts or wheel bearings. The boot of an outer constant velocity joint was already replaced under warranty... Unfortunately, I won't be able to look into this in more detail until the weekend.

Has anyone else made similar observations and been able to pinpoint a specific error?

Ha, of course: a spring problem, close the window! icon_biggrin.gif Then it will be gone. Seriously, I have no idea. However, if it were a bearing/shaft, shouldn't the noise change with the speed? I think you'll have to get under the car to take a look.

Yes, I will have to. I won't be able to do it until Saturday.

I still have a small hope that there's just a small stone wedged between the anchor plate and the brake disc. On the way home, I'm going to find a route with cobblestones.

Hi,

"The grinding noise remained constant for a few days, only occurring when the car was cold. Then, suddenly, it also started happening when the car was warm and after a short stop. I then tried all sorts of things, like driving backward with the wheels fully turned, abruptly braking backward with the handbrake, and also abruptly braking a few times with the foot brake. After that, the noise stopped."

The following day, I visually inspected everything I could reach under the car. I found nothing. While washing the car in the self-service car wash, I used the pressure washer to thoroughly verschandeln behind the openings in the wheel wells. As of today, everything is still quiet. Therefore, I suspect there is a foreign object lodged in the brake system. Fortunately, the glass surfaces do not show any noticeable scratches.

When I change the tires – which I unfortunately had to postpone from this weekend to the next – I will double-check everything again.
