Hello!
I drive a 2002 Volkswagen Golf 4. I had 8.5 x 18' wheels installed on Friday, but when the steering is at full lock, the inner edge of the tires rubs against the firewall to the engine compartment. Has anyone here ever limited the maximum steering angle? If not on a Golf, perhaps on another VAG vehicle?
What costs can I expect? I want to be able to give my girlfriend the car without having to give her a fifteen-minute explanation on how to park.
Have a good evening!
Tobias.

Hello,
How did you manage to get those 18' tires/rims registered, even though they rub against the wheel arch?
That TÜV inspector must have been in a really good mood.

Hello,
I would file a complaint because the tires are being 'damaged'!
Best regards,

Hi,
Unfortunately, I can't accept a return because I sold the tires to myself. To be precise, our shop is registered as a retailer with the wholesaler, so we bear this risk. Returns are not possible. Also, I don't want an alternative solution; I actually want to limit the steering angle.
Please do not recommend wheel spacers, as that would result in another entry for inspection at the TÜV.
Greetings, and thank you in advance for your reply.

The guy from the TÜV was fine. He was under the car, and I was supposed to turn the steering wheel all the way .
The rest was just routine work.

Hi!
'This is the old problem with the Golf 4, the rubbing sound on the left longitudinal member when the steering wheel is fully turned.'
There are (I can't remember the company name, you can Google it) steering angle limiters available for the Golf 4. They cost around €150. They are mounted on the tie rods/steering linkage and limit the maximum steering angle, acting as a kind of buffer.
The problem is that getting it registered, as all the TÜV inspectors I know have so far refused to do so. Maybe you've managed to find a more understanding person.

Hey,
Thanks for the tip! However, it doesn't really help me much.
'I don't really want to have to go back to the TÜV (German technical inspection agency) again because of something like that. Do you think it's possible to hammer out the dent in the affected area, i.e., push it inwards? It's going to need to be repainted and sealed anyway...'
Sure, here is the translation of the text from German to English:
'Hello,'

I don't want to spread rumors , but to my knowledge, models that were originally fitted with 17" wheels (Sport Edition, GT Sport, etc.) had steering racks with reduced travel installed. This might potentially solve your problem.
Your dealer might know more if you specifically ask them about it.

Hello!
Your assumption is correct. I've known about this for a while. A steering gearbox with a shorter stroke will be used. A dealer quoted me around €4000, including installation, about 2 years ago.
For understandable reasons, I would rather refrain from doing that .
Hello!
