Hi.
Besides my Seat, I also have a Fiat Punto from 1994 with a faulty rear lower control arm bushing.
Can the bearings be removed using a hammer and screwdriver, or is a hydraulic press required?

Best regards, Frank.

I think a new rear axle needs to be installed – everything is a one-way component. It will cost around 350 euros.

Hello Mahk.
There's even a repair kit available for it.
I just wanted to know if a hydraulic press is absolutely necessary, or if a powerful hammer would be sufficient.
Basically, you can detach the control arm directly at the bearing, remove the old bearing, insert the new one, and then either reattach the control arm or leave it detached.
Best regards, Frank.

They definitely won't survive if they get hit.
But maybe you can do something with threaded rods and spacers.
Sure, here's the translation:

Yes, the "spacers" are also just rubber pieces that are slipped over the screws and only reduce the play. A colleague recently investigated this after the Fiat mechanics quoted 1,100 euros for the "rear axle housing and control arms replacement" job.

Yes, the 'shim kit' also only consists of rubber pieces that are placed over the screws and actually only reduce the play.

Hi.
Two storage containers are also included.
Ask the colleague if this can be done with a hammer or exclusively with hydraulics.
The rubber bushing is solely a spacer for the bearings, preventing them from moving and ensuring they stay in their intended positions.

Best regards, Frank.

I just asked him.

Then you have the repair kit for the swingarm. This kit includes bearings that need to be pressed in. My colleague installed the repair kit for the axle housing, which only consists of the sleeves.

A friend of mine (driving a Fiat Punto from 1999) had the outer bearing on the passenger side fail. The rear axle arm cost around 90 euros at ATU. The screw cost about 12 euros (apparently, it's prone to breaking). A local garage replaced it for a fixed price of 90 euros.
The price quoted by Fiat is €230, including parts.

Hi.
Yesterday, I finally had the time and opportunity to do it.
The repair kit contains the same components that are already included as standard.
2 tapered roller bearings.
2 rubber seals.
2 brass covers?
1 wave.
1 plastic pipe as a moisture barrier.
1 screw and nut.
Once the control arms are removed, the rest of the process isn't a big problem.
Actually.
Pry off the top cover using two sturdy screwdrivers.
Or drill a hole and then use the chisel.
Most of the remaining material will then come out with a hammer.
The bearing shells that are still in the control arm can be removed in the same way as from a drum brake.
Hammer, punch, etc.
By the way, the bearings don't break down due to wear and tear, but simply rust away because water penetrates them.
Actually, you don't even need an expensive repair kit, just the bearings.
However, I forgot to write down the exact size.

The assembly is relatively simple.
The wave ring was placed in the large vise, and the inner part of the first bearing was pressed into place.
Next, press the cover down until it aligns with the ridge.
(Vise with extension + large hammer)
And don't forget the rubber seal!
Make sure to insert the bearing shells into the control arms and don't forget the plastic sleeve in between.
Add a generous amount of fat.
Insert the wave spring with one bearing into the control arm, secure it in a vise, then press the second bearing and the second cover onto it.
If both covers are flush with the wave, then the bearing clearance is also correct.
Reinstall and done.

I just wanted to share something so that there aren't only questions here, but also answers.
Best regards, Frank.

Is the rear axle the same as the one in the '99 model? If you have the opportunity, could you please compare them?

Hey Taxi Rat.
I don't have that option.
Just ask the spare parts specialist if the parts are compatible.
Or search on eBay and compare the part numbers.
Best regards, Frank.
