Hello everyone,

Recently, a colleague purchased an Octavia II with a TDI engine and DSG transmission, and we were recently discussing how the clutches are precisely engaged when starting from a standstill.

In automatic mode, the device behaves like a "typical" automatic transmission with a torque converter. For example, when in "D" mode, the car will gently roll forward if no accelerator is applied, while in "N" mode, the engine load can be heard to decrease. It appears that the feeling of an automatic transmission has been replicated – at the start, the clutch is eventually fully engaged.

The dealer told my colleague that this is achieved by slipping the clutch(es), but that there's no need to worry, as they are designed for that, and can also be held in gear with the brake pedal pressed for longer periods.

What do you think? Or does anyone have any information about this? I don't actually find this behavior very useful.

Regarding the DSG (Data Protection Act), you can find information online, such as the following:

http://www.kfztech.de/gast/schubert/dsg.htm

"However, I find some of the claims made to be at least worth questioning (e.g., that the clutch is disengaged when reducing speed to save fuel, because we know that an engine in cruising mode consumes nothing, while it needs less than 1 liter/hour in idle - this should have been compared to the reduced loss of speed...)"

Best regards,

Jan.

In automatic mode, the device behaves like a 'typical' automatic transmission with a torque converter. Therefore, when in 'D' position, the car will slightly roll forward if no gas is given, while in 'N' position, the engine load can be heard to decrease. It seems that the feeling of an automatic transmission has been replicated – during acceleration, the clutch is eventually fully engaged.

The dealer told my colleague that this is achieved by slipping the clutch(es), but that there's no need to worry, as they are designed for that, and can also be held in gear with the brake pressed for longer periods.

What do you think, or does anyone have information about this? I don't actually find this behavior very meaningful.

The so-called 'creeping function' is certainly a matter of personal preference, but it can be very useful, for example, when maneuvering.
However, with the DSG transmission and Borg-Warner dual-clutch system, this is the least of the problems.
While wet-running multi-plate clutches are typically designed to slip under certain conditions, they can still transmit a certain amount of continuous torque, for example, when used in a 'slipping' mode.
This principle is also used in, for example, 'hill holder' systems, etc.

Here's a small tip: try a 6-on-2 configuration under full load.
Okay, so it's sixth gear, very low RPM, then floor the accelerator, and then downshift four times quickly in succession. But please keep your foot on the gas.

Hi,

"Are you going to tell me what's supposed to happen next? My colleague definitely won't try that... the car hasn't even been broken in yet."

Best regards,

Jan.

Hello Jan,

"I also find the creep function quite useful for the reasons mentioned above. Real wear and tear doesn't occur with such small moments."
I recently had the opportunity to thoroughly test the DSG, specifically in a 2.0 TFSI model with front-wheel drive. I can only say that the clutch engages very abruptly as soon as you press the accelerator and torque is transmitted, which unfortunately often results in wheelspin (I think that's what the person meant), but it does prevent wear (on the clutch). What bothered me more was the tendency to downshift too quickly on the highway, sometimes from 5th to 4th gear, even though the engine doesn't exactly lack torque. The solution is to put the gear lever in manual mode, which keeps it in 6th gear. Overall, it's the first automatic transmission that's worth the money.

Best regards,
Albrecht

THIS IS NOT AN AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION!

But otherwise, you're right.

If it's not an automatic transmission, what is it then?

The type of gearbox construction has nothing to do with the gearbox's function.

Whether I choose a planetary gearbox, a conventional gearbox, or one with two input shafts and a dual-clutch system, I can operate them all manually or have them automatically shifted using appropriate technology.

Here, it is solely determined whether the transmission is designated as a 'manual' or 'automatic' gearbox.

You will find many vehicles with manually shifted planetary gearboxes in the off-highway sector.

Hi,

Quote:

Unfortunately, this often ends up being a grinding noise (I think that's what the colleague means), but it prevents wear (on the clutch).

Actually, the clutch wear was already an issue, but he probably doesn't have the problem with the erasing function on that particular Octavia.

Best regards,

Jan.
