Hello,
I have a customer who installed a 115PS TDI engine in his Vento, but he didn't have the corresponding engine control unit (ECU) and instrument cluster (IC). He has now acquired an IC from a Passat TDI, year 2002, and an MSG (module for body electronics) from a Passat, year 1999, but now it seems that VW is unable to adapt them.
MSG should be WFS2, and AI should be WFS3. Is AI not backward compatible with WFS2, or what could be the reason for this?
Does anyone have any advice or can anyone help?

I am not saying that it is impossible, but I suspect that it will not work.
At Immo-3, the MSG (Modular Signaling Gateway) knows the vehicle identification number (VIN) and the Immo-ID. At Immo-2, it does not. Therefore, I imagine that the data exchanged between the MSG and the KI (Key Identification) before the engine start looks completely different in Immo-3 compared to Immo-2.
I'm quite certain that a 1999 Passat's MSG (Main System Module) performs the IMMO (Immobilizer) negotiation on the 'W' line before engine start, and that the 2002 instrument cluster (KI) attempts to do it on the drive CAN bus.
Recently, why do you think VW cares about backward compatibility? The opinion at VW is: When parts are replaced, they should simply be replaced with the CORRECT parts.

Not VW, I thought so, but it's different. If anything, MSG is backward compatible.
VW is not a workshop; they can only replace parts.
Okay, if you put it that way, it won't work because of the "can" functionality, so we need to use an AI without that feature.
"Thank you."

I could offer you the MSG (Motorelektroniksteuergerät - engine control unit) from my 2000 Volkswagen Golf IV with a 115 HP TDI engine!
If it works, your customer will buy it; if not, then just charge a small fee to cover the costs.

A 1999 Passat should already have CAN bus technology.
Best regards, WarLord.

A '99 Passat should definitely have CAN.
For US models, it was from the model year 2000 onwards.
According to wiring diagrams for Euro models, starting in May 1999. If that was still the 1999 model year, then it would have been only the last few months.

It could be, as the ajm has been in production since 10/98. How can I find out now whether the msg already has CAN functionality, i.e., the manufacturing date?
@ dan.jel, thank you, thank you, but that's only a new one, so it will actually be cheaper for me if I buy a used one from a 1999 model.

It should be possible to determine in AKTE when a specific MSG (Modular System Group) was installed.
But even if the MSG CAN has Immo-2, it's still only Immo-2, while the AI has Immo-3.

Okay, thanks, I'll take another look at the FILE.
I think I'd be better off getting a KI (likely referring to a specific part) without the CAN (Controller Area Network) function from a 1999 model!
Can anyone offer something?

*blows away the dust*
Hi,
The thread is a bit old, but it fits quite well with my general problem.
I drive a Passat 3B manufactured in late 1998, definitely without CAN bus, so it has Immo-2.
Currently, it is possible to install combination instrument panels with CAN-Bus in vehicles without CAN using a suitable adapter - an adapter board generates the appropriate CAN control words for the instrument cluster. Background: I would like to have the large MFA, but finding a suitable instrument cluster for my car is, as you know, almost as likely as winning the lottery.
For me, the primary question now is whether it's possible to install Immo-3 key interfaces in my vehicle. Unfortunately, I've found conflicting information in various forums regarding whether this is compatible or not, and no one seems to have a definitive answer. Is it perhaps simply the case that Immo-3 key interfaces only work with Immo-2 modules that already have CAN bus capability, and that they don't work if the module doesn't yet have CAN bus?
Best regards,
Marcus.

If you don't find the information you need here, try visiting gti-tdi.de.
They are dealing with the problem of WFS.
Just a heads-up, though you probably already know: Speedometers with CAN bus functionality will have "920" in the part number (xxxx 920 xxx), while those without CAN bus will have "919". You can never directly swap them without modifications or adapters. VW Golf V, 1,9 TDI, 77KW, BLS, 2007;

I'm familiar with the website and forum, which is why I had the idea about the adapter... I've also searched the forum, but I haven't found any truly conclusive results.

I also took a closer look at that. According to information from there, it should be possible to install an Immo3 module into an Immo2 system using the old initialization procedure (channel 21). The post was written by the administrator.
However, unfortunately, I couldn't find any information about whether both vehicles had CAN bus systems or just one. But perhaps you should use this thread to get your question answered. VW Golf V, 1,9 TDI, 77KW, BLS, 2007;

Okay, I'll look into that in parallel, let's see. I don't think there will be too many practical experiences yet, as not many CAN-KIs have been installed in non-CAN vehicles... let's see .
Thank you in advance for your participation .

I would be interested to see the result. It's very difficult to find a speedometer with FIS (Multi-Function Display) for a Golf IV.
Good luck! VW Golf V, 1,9 TDI, 77KW, BLS, 2007;

I would be interested in the result. Since a speedometer with FIS for a Golf IV is also very difficult to find.
Good luck.
'It's possible, but it always depends on which specific one you're looking for.'
and ultimately, the price always reflects the demand.
that's where the problem likely lies.
