Hello fellow mechanics,

My friend just bought an Audi A4 Avant with a 115 horsepower PD AJM engine.
In addition to the general paperwork, there was also a separate document that stated:
It is due to technical reasons that there are no extended service intervals available for this engine.
'Quote:'

For your vehicle, the 'Longlife Service' cannot be applied for technical reasons. Fixed maintenance intervals apply. blablabla............

The models affected are the A3 with a 96-kW engine and the A4 with an 85-kW engine.

What is this supposed to mean?
Can't this be rearranged?

AJM, ohwee! icon_rolleyes.gif

A very unreliable engine!

z.B.: http://www.passatplus.de/umbauten/motor/schaden.htm I already know of 5 AJMs with the same defect!

You can identify longlife or WIV oil by the data sticker in the service booklet or in the spare tire well. The abbreviation 'QG1' must be listed there!

Regards,

Manuel.

It doesn't look very good, to be honest. Were the engines tuned?
Apart from the valve, the piston looks like it's suffering from excessive injection duration.
Or are these side effects of valve disease?

Oh dear, I have the exact same engine with a 400 Nm chip (without the longlife version). What about the durability? icon_evil.gif

To the best of my knowledge, the engine in the photograph is not tuned.

Manuel.

Hello fellow mechanics,

What I would really like to know are the technical reasons behind all of this.
for a service that is not a longlife service.
Did anyone happen to find a bargain on some discounted timing belts?

Read what I wrote here!

http://www.octavia-forum.de/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1991&highlight=longlife

That should answer all questions about WIV!

Regards,

Manuel.

Wasn't the piston failure a reason for a recall campaign in the early 2000s? If I recall correctly, it was due to a faulty surface treatment of the pistons.

Best regards, Gerd.

Stupid question: What does the timing belt have to do with "longlife"?
To the best of my knowledge, no!
"Longlife Service" (or "WIV") only relates to the oil change intervals and requires a special, relatively expensive oil, as well as various sensors for "oil wear measurement." These sensors are missing from your AJM, so there will be no WIV.
The ZR change interval is not affected by WIV.

Hello,

In addition, various changes have been made in the area of mechanical actuation of the PD elements in the Longlife PD system. The problem was the high surface pressures between the camshaft and the rocker arm.

Hello,

@ Bertil

I must have gotten something mixed up. I previously thought that, for example, on an ALH engine without the longlife oil specification, the timing belt would need to be replaced after 60,000 km, and only then.
That was probably just a coincidence, and I mistakenly associated the ZR service interval with the longlife oil specification.

Okay, what does 'ajm' mean here? Is it a very unreliable engine? Don't make me nervous! I have the 'ajm' in my Golf, and I haven't had any problems at all in 70,000 km! What do you mean by 'prone to faults' icon_question.gif? Do other people know anything about it? And what are your experiences with the 'ajm'?
Thank you for your effort!

Hello,

My AJM engine (produced in May 2001) has also been running for approximately 55,000 km without any problems or issues.

Hello,

I just bought a Bora with an AJM engine and 135,000 km, don't be afraid!! icon_wink.gif

As far as I know, he only had the mass airflow sensor replaced once.

Regards,
Carsten.

I know of a AJM engine (without the "Longlife" designation) that needed a new head gasket at 75,000 km because it was consuming a noticeable amount of coolant.
The driver (a friend of mine) really takes good care of the car (he always warms it up properly, and strictly adheres to the maintenance schedule, including inspections and oil changes).

Hello,

The AJM engine is not more prone to problems than any other PD engine. Don't let yourselves get worked up about it. I now have 92,000 km on the odometer, and I've had a PD injector fail at 20,000 km (which happened shortly after an RME service, coincidence?), and the mass airflow sensor has failed twice.

Since I installed the PSI-Box at 23,000 km, I haven't had any problems.
