Hi,
I have a static error code of 00285 on the front right sensor of my Ibiza 6K GP01 (the sensors are 1J0, like in the Golf 3/4).
Before we buy a new sensor, I wanted to test whether the problem is with the sensor itself or with the cable.

I would bet you 1:10 right now that it's not the cable. Most often, the sensor is dirty, misaligned (if possible with that model), or defective. Alternatively, the encoder disc could be bent or torn. (EDIT: With the G3, it was directly on the drive shaft, so the last option is ruled out).

Since it operates inductively, you should ideally be able to measure capacitance rather than resistance. This capacitance should then change depending on the wheel position.
I would first visually inspect the sensor and verschandeln the "teeth" of the drive shaft. If metal dust or rust has accumulated there, the capacitive measurement principle will no longer work. If that doesn't solve the problem, I would replace the sensor without further measurements. Other errors are extremely rare.

Um... As far as I know, the sensors work inductively.
Then a resistance should be measurable (estimated freely from experience, somewhere in the kOhm range, 0 Ohms = defective, no continuity = also defective) .
As a reference, you can take one of the other 3 sensors .
Adjusting the wheel alignment changes the inductance, but to measure it, you would need a device like an LCR meter.
Capacitive sensors are sometimes used, for example, as steering angle sensors. I wouldn't expect to find them in an ABS system, though... |   Gruß Ulf

Hello!
ABS sensors typically have a coil resistance of approximately 1.2 kOhms, although this can vary depending on the manufacturer and may be as high as 1.8 kOhms.
The easiest way to measure the error is with an oscilloscope. With the ignition switched off, simply turn the crankshaft. You should see a smooth sine wave; the faster you turn it, the larger the amplitude. If you detect a signal when the ignition is on, it indicates test pulses that are monitoring the sensor.
I just read that errors often occur when things are running smoothly.

Oh dear, I seem to have written quite a confusing text. Of course, it is an inductive sensor and should therefore be testable using the methods you specified.
The Golf 3 also had a toothed wheel. My old Ford Scorpio's rear axle had the "teeth" on the driveshaft for the ABS system.
Therefore, only the general conclusion remains from my previous statement: It's either a faulty aperture plate or a sensor issue. The probability of another type of error is less than 10%. | |

If the ABS warning light remains on, it is usually due to a problem with the speed sensors or the tone ring.
This can be checked as follows:
Measuring resistance.
- Disconnect the sensor and connect it to the two test leads of the measuring device, connecting each lead to one of the sensor's contacts.
Set point: approximately 1200-1800 Ohms.
- Connect one test lead to ground and the other to any of the sensor's terminals.
The target value should be in the megaohm range.
If both values are within the acceptable range, you should then check the signal.
Check the sender's signal.
- Jack up the vehicle (while ensuring it is securely supported to prevent rolling or falling).
- Reconnect the two test cables of the measuring device to the two contacts of the sensor.
- Set the measuring instrument to AC voltage (measurement range: 200 mV).
- Rotate the wheel, regardless of direction.
Set point: approximately 100 mV. However, it also depends on the speed (or RPM).
If no signal is received, the distance between the sensor and the toothed wheel may be too large, or the toothed wheel itself may be defective.
Read error codes.
Before starting any troubleshooting work, it's recommended to have the error codes read from the vehicle's computer so you can get an idea of where the problem might be located.
Note regarding target values.
The specified target values may vary slightly from vehicle to vehicle.
But the values should be almost identical for each axis.
