It's something you can do, but you don't necessarily have to. It's more important to use the correct torque settings for the bolts. If it's a VAG diesel engine, you should replace the tensioner stud and follow the tensioning instructions. There are some rollers where the entire tensioning process needs to be repeated if the roller is tightened too much.
