I think only the Audi dealer can help you with the 1997 model. If you ask nicely, they might do it for you free of charge.
Starting at 99, you can reset it via the instrument cluster.

That's because I have to look it up in the instruction manual myself. If it's in the instruction manual, then anyone can read it themselves.
For those of you who didn't see it written down: I'll take a look during my lunch break.

The operating manual "Operating the Instrument Cluster" states, in the section "Service - Interval - Display" on page 60, something to the effect of the following:

Inside the cockpit, there are two buttons: one for setting the clock (1) and another for the trip odometer (2).

- Ignition off.
- (2) Press and hold, then turn the ignition on.
- (1) Move to delete 'service OEL'.
- (2) Press the button; "service INSP" will appear.
- (1) Drag to delete.

I would like to add to what Rainer said that the time setting knob needs to be pulled for about 2 seconds until three dashes appear on the display.

This should (without guarantee) work for vehicles manufactured between 1996 and 1999. From 1999 onwards, it is only possible via the diagnostic connector. (Source: H.R. Ezoldt, 'So wird's gemacht,' Volume 110).

Um, isn't it actually the other way around? On my 2000 A4 and A3 models from 1999, manufactured in 2000, it works through the buttons...

As mentioned, the source is a do-it-yourself book. It worked through the buttons on my A3 from 1998, but it didn't work on my A4 from 2000.
