Hello, I'm getting a "Control unit defective (short circuit)" error code on my Sharan engine control unit when using VAG-Com. The Bosch tester says "Control unit digital section defective." It's only running in limp mode and not recognizing the mass airflow sensor. I've already tried a new mass airflow sensor, but it's showing implausible values with the ignition on, even with different sensors. I have an AFN engine, and the car was manufactured in 1999. The control unit is a 028 906 021 JJ. What do the last two letters (JJ) signify (programming)? What other control units are compatible with this vehicle?

Please check the connectors and the wiring harness first! It's quite possible that interference is being introduced from somewhere, whether it's due to chafing, water ingress, or damage caused by rodents. This kind of thing can cause the most complex error patterns.

The "JJ" at the end indicates something about the software. A good chip tuner can, for example, convert a different "021 xx" model into a "021 JJ" if they know how.

Thank you for the quick response. I've already checked the wiring, and everything seems to be okay. I think we might have damaged something when we were repairing the engine, and we had a charger connected to start it while we were bleeding the system. Would an engine control unit (ECU) from a Golf or Audi with an AFN engine fit without needing to change the software?

I could, for example, get one with a CE marking from an Audi A4.
028 906 021 CE
or a GL from a Passat 3B.

Google: Bosch ecat.
Enter your part number and see which subsequent part numbers it replaces. Then, check which other numbers have been superseded by that subsequent part number.

I've already been there. The only thing he says is:
98VW 12E599 DB
028 906 021 JJ
0 281 001 967
And the last two are located on the control unit.

The engine can also be made to run with a different (similar) ECU, provided the WFS (working frequency spectrum) is adjusted. However, you may have to deal with unpleasant side effects (jerking, reduced/increased power in certain RPM ranges, incorrect fuel consumption readings, etc.) if the software of the other ECU is not perfectly compatible with the engine's hardware.
