Here's another tip for all those with standing water heaters. Regarding the fuel line modification: After ensuring that the return line extends all the way to the bottom of the tank, I only installed a T-connector in the engine compartment on the return line for the diesel fuel. It has been working flawlessly since installation, even down to the lowest reserve level.
I did it the same way with my Golf back then, directly after the filter with a T-piece, and it worked flawlessly for 11 years .
