But what was the lamp clamping voltage you were using? About 12V? Then the images would probably be quite far from reality, because the lamps are supposed to be operated with approximately 13.5V icon_eek.gif?

The brightness differences are not significantly different; only the Blue Vision Ultra seemed to perform a bit better and shifted its light color slightly towards blue. I found it remarkable that the Osram standard bulb showed a more noticeable reddish tint at 13.5 V. Whatever the source of this red tint may be. Did the manufacturer intend this?

Letzter Teil meines Lichttests mit den Longlife-Produkten, die ich leihweise von meinem Teiledealer zur Verfügung gestellt bekam. Umgebungsbedingungen wie im ersten Teil! Und natürlich wurde auch der Golf 4-Scheinwerfer (H7) wieder eingesetzt. Leider ist mir erst heute aufgefallen, daß die am Donnerstag aufgenommenen Fotos mit der kleinstmöglichen Auflösung erstellt wurden, weshalb die Bilder jetzt auch recht grob wirken. MiHe just didn't have the motivation to re-record everything again.

The candidates:

Osram Light @ Day [1], Future Light Long Live Gold [2], EcoStar Silver-LL [3], Michiba Livetime [4], and Motorcraft LL [5].

Die Osram Light @ Day [1] muß eine Frischzellenkur bekommen haben. Ihr früher recht gelbliches Lichtbild hat sie völlig abgelegt und glänzt nun mit einer recht normal wirkenden Glühlampenfarbe. Einzig im direkten Vergleich zu einer helligkeitsgesteigerten Lampe fällt auf, daß sie dunkler ist und ihr Reichweite fehlt. Trotzdem ein sehr homogenes Lichtbild mit schöner Breite und einwandfreier Geometrie. Ich sah allerdings weder in der Ausleuchtung noch in der Architektur der Lampe einen Unterschied zum deutlich preiswerteren Standardteil. Is it possible that the "Light @ Day" event is just a marketing gimmick?

The Future Light Long Life Gold [2] has a slightly narrower beam angle, and its appearance is enhanced by a gold-colored anodized base. It exhibits some unevenness in the illumination and lacks reach in terms of width. Despite the apparent lack of direct contact between the filament and the glass base, the light distribution is glare-free. However, this likely contributes to the uneven light pattern.

Mir völlig unbekannt ist Prüfling Nummer [3], die EcoStar Silver-LL. Die kommt laut Verpackung aus China und verzichtet auf ein E-Prüfzeichen. Ihre Kappe auf dem Glassockel ist silber lackiert. Auch ohne E-Prüfzeichen ist die Fertigungspräzision einwandfrei. Alles ist gerade zusammengebaut und vom Lichtbild her gefällt sie mir an sich am besten in diesem Test. Sie gibt sehr viel Licht in die Breite und konzentriert es nicht punktförmig. Ihr Licht holt sie aus der größten und längsten Glühwendel im Test. TrotzThe performance data have been met (see table at the end).

The Michiba Livetime [4] comes from Japan and also does not have an E-mark approval. Its manufacturing quality is impeccable. As a visual effect, the base is painted a bright blue. Subjectively, it's the second brightest lamp in this test. The light distribution is excellent, and there is sufficient illumination on both the road and the shoulder.

Das düsterste Kapitel im Test ist eine Motorcraft LL, die meines Wissens der Philips Longlife entspricht. Sie ist als einzige im Test kurz gebraucht worden und nach 2 - 3 Nachtfahrten aus einem Ford Focus geflogen. Düster wie ein Bärena*sch!! icon_rolleyes.gif Lichtverteilung zwar einwandfrei, jedoch überall zuwenig. Dazu diese unglaublich braungelbe Lichtfarbe, die subjektiv schon finster wirkt. Dem Abblendlicht fehlt damit effektive Reichweite. In einiger Entfernung gibt es nur noch einen hellen Lichtpunkt auf der eigenen Fahrbahn und für den Rest bleibt nicht mehr viel übrig. Auch wenn sie ewig halten würde, mit so wenig Licht ist jede Nachtfahrt ein Blindflug. icon_rolleyes.gif


Measured performance values at 12V:

Osram Light @ Day: 4.73 A = 56.8 W, Future Light Long Live Gold: 4.81 A = 57.7 W, EcoStar Silver-LL: 5.0 A = 60 W, Michiba Livetime: 4.95 A = 59.4 W, and Motorcraft LL: 4.33 A = 52 W.

Has anyone ever tried those xenon retrofit kits that are widely offered on [online marketplace name]? I had the opportunity to try a plug-and-play kit through my parts dealer.

Natuerlich nicht StVZO-konform, Hersteller "Hee Jin", VR China...

The brightly neon-yellow cardboard packaging was labeled in English and promised "OEM Quality." Okay, they're really making some bold claims there!

Beim Auspacken fanden wir je zwei "Han Long" D2R-Brenner (jedenfalls ohne Abschirmung) und Vorschaltgeraete vom gleichen Hersteller vor. Dazu gab es jeweils einen vorgefertigten Kabelbaum zum Brenner sowie einen, den man auf den H7-Lampenstecker aufstecken soll. Witzigerweise ist Verpolung hier egal, denn die Vorschaltgeraete wollen jeweils nochmal Dauerplus und Masse extra. Die fahrzeugseitigen Lampenleitungen sind also nur noch Steuerleitung. Die mitgelieferten Brenner sind fest in eine H7-Lampenfassung eingepresst und werden ans Vorschaltgeraet angesteckt. These cables have a relatively thick insulation layer, and their connectors are designed to be splash-proof.

The installation on the headlight side was completed within 2 minutes. We skipped connecting the ballasts and properly routing the wiring, simply stuffing everything carelessly into my Peugeot. After all, it was only a test for the sample set that was delivered, which may potentially be imported in larger quantities.

The practical test took place on Friday evening in the dark. We used a headlight alignment tool (workshop equipment) to check the settings. Surprisingly, they were exactly as they should be. The integrated measuring device showed a light intensity of 354%. However, I don't know what the reference value of 100% represents.

Also haben wir das Fahrzeug rausgeschoben und uns die Lichtverteilung angesehen. Zunaechst einmal schoen breit und absolut fleckenfrei. Die Farbtemperatur ist mit 4700 K angegeben. Das Licht wirkt neutralweiss und sieht auf den ersten Blick nichtmal nach Xenon aus. Eher wie sehr helles Halogenlicht. Die Blendwirkung ist auf trockener Fahrbahn fuer den Gegenverkehr subjektiv okay, nasse Fahrbahnoberflaeche reflektiert aber boese hell. Well, there's no way to avoid that.

Since I wasn't planning on leaving the lights installed in the vehicle (as they are not street legal), I still took a short test drive around the neighborhood to get an idea of how they performed. Conclusion: If it weren't illegal, it would be awesome. I've never seen so much light on the road, with such a perfect distinction between light and dark areas, and such even light distribution.

I found the power-on delay of approximately 7 seconds to be useful, as it prevents the burners from igniting before the engine starts. The burners with their housings and the cable to the ballast unit can be reordered for $23 each.

My dealer doesn't care what customers do with the kits; they are sold with the disclaimer that they are not street legal. But it's amazing how what started as poorly assembled junk has now at least been manufactured to a decent standard. They're definitely fun as a gimmick for a car show or for a rally car.

The unpackaged burners are exposed on the glass bulb without any shielding. The "User's Manual" stated that the systems are suitable for projector headlights or reflector headlights, provided the latter have a cover that limits light distribution. This is the case with my headlights. If the cover is missing, xenon kits specifically designed for left-hand drive or right-hand drive vehicles, along with corresponding metal deflectors, can be ordered. These are supposed to be part of the burner system, but they are not shown in the pictures.

Last week, I had this xenon kit that has been sitting unused in my garage again. So, I just took some pictures, which I definitely want to share with you!

Abgesehen von der Nichtzulaessigkeit der Xenon-Nachruestsysteme (seine Zulassung hat der Scheinwerfer mit Halogenlampen bekommen!) kommt natuerlich 'ne ganze Menge mehr Licht raus. Wer das (legal) haben will, der sollte das naechste Auto mit serienmaessigem Xenon kaufen. icon_wink.gif

Here are the pictures! Picture 1 shows the low beam headlight with eight-month-old Osram Cool Blue bulbs (also known as "Tesla," from Lidl), and picture 2 shows the Chinese xenon kit. They were installed for testing purposes in reflector headlights of a Peugeot 206.

Note: Distracting street lamp has been digitally removed. Taken with a camera from an SE W810i phone. Not exactly known for its low-light performance, but I think you can still see the difference.
