Airbag Control Unit: Coding Only?

Hi,
Since my airbag control unit is likely faulty, I would like to replace it with a new one that has the exact same part number: 6Q0909605B.

Is there anything else I need to consider when switching, besides simply transferring the old encoding to the new one?
There's a sticker on the airbag control unit that makes me a little more cautious.

"Warning: Airbag!"
This device contains vehicle-specific data for its operation.
"Do not install in other vehicles."

Does this mean that the software can be different even with the same part number, or is this just a general warning?

Do you have the necessary qualifications and permits to work on airbags? If not, you shouldn't be working on these systems. Also, the part number you provided is incomplete, and without a vehicle scan or VIN, no one will be able to provide you with the correct airbag coding.

I don't plan on messing with the airbag system itself. And if even the workshop foreman says, "Just disconnect the airbag control unit – nothing can happen. The only thing that will happen is the airbag warning light will illuminate on the instrument cluster," then I thought I could also replace the control unit if it just needs to be reprogrammed.

However, if more than just a simple recoding is required, then I would refrain from doing it.

However, the complete vehicle scan and the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) are still missing, but ultimately that doesn't matter. Furthermore, the coding of a control unit is also counted under "Work on airbag systems," because the coding process activates the control unit, and once it's activated, the airbag system can be triggered even by clearing the error memory.

What would be the sensible thing to do? Should I go to VW and buy the control unit there, for a multiple of the price?
On eBay, you can find these control units for around 50 euros, even from vehicles that haven't been in accidents.

VW explicitly prohibits the installation of used airbag components. However, since the manufacturer's guidelines are legally binding, it raises questions about whether installing a used control unit is even legal. In practice, you can check the origin and history of the control unit, for example, whether it has already been deployed or not. The discussion about used control units has already been extensive, but we do not support it – especially not without proof of the necessary authorization.

P.S.: By the way, the airbag control unit is also no longer available for new orders. The part number 6Q0-909-605-B-005 has been replaced multiple times, and the current part number is 1C0-909-605-B-00E.

You're right. If I were to order the control unit now, I would have to use the part number you provided.

However, that doesn't change the fact that a used, unused part with my part number and the correct (my old) coding should work with my system - or am I mistaken?
