Passat 35i: Replace Rear Brake Discs

How can I replace the rear brake discs on a VW Passat 35i? To put it another way, how are they attached to the body of the car? (I'm not sure how else to phrase this question.)

Well, primarily, they are attached to the axle. Have you ever replaced the front ones? If not, I recommend getting a "Help Yourself" book. It has really good photos and explains the whole process clearly. If you've done it on the front before, it's relatively similar. First, you need to remove the brake caliper, which is attached with two screws on the left and right sides. Then, you need to loosen the cross screw (somewhere between two wheel bolt holes) --> usually, there isn't much you can do with a screwdriver there. I had to force it out. After that, all that remains is to remove the brake disc from the back. That wasn't easy for me either. I treated it heavily with rust remover, and eventually, I got it off.
Maybe you should take another look at a book, but with no guarantee... Matthias.

Okay, I watched the mechanic while he was removing the brake calipers. It's not rocket science. I just wanted to get a general idea of the process, especially what kind of screw it is that holds the rotor onto the axle (which you explained -> a Phillips head screw).

The replacement of the rear brake discs is not the same process as replacing the front ones!
More like replacing a brake drum. The wheel bearing has to be removed along with it!
It's definitely worth getting the book!

When retracting the brake pistons, you must rotate them. Before doing so, carefully lift or loosen the dust boot (otherwise it will rotate with the piston and tear).
