Hello, especially to the "VAG insiders".
From the thread "Euro2 to Euro3..."
kapselchrissi wrote: | | I recently found a small advertisement from VW in my car... I believe they were offering a catalytic converter retrofit for TDIs to ultimately meet a better emissions standard... I didn't pay much attention to it at the time, so I can't recall the details exactly | .
That seems interesting enough to warrant creating a separate thread.
Because, depending on future tax differences, for example between Euro 2 and 3 standards, something like this might potentially pay for itself in a few years.
Retrofitting for TDIs would, for me, mean installing a better catalytic converter, because, as far as I know, all TDIs (from the beginning of production) already have an oxidation catalytic converter.
Does anyone here know any more details about such a VAG campaign? Gruß Ulf

Hello Ulf,
Rainer has already written:
Quote: | Since, starting in 2004, the tax for diesel passenger cars with Euro 2 standards will be 16.05 EUR/100cm3, and for Euro 3 standards 15.44 EUR/100cm3, it's probably not worth considering a conversion.

Will it pay for itself in 100 years?
An oxidation catalyst won't achieve much in terms of reducing pollutant classes; it will only oxidize CO and HC. These pollutants are not the main issue with diesel engines; their levels are well below the limits. The problem is the imbalance between particulate matter (PM) and NOx emissions.
A retrofit particulate filter would be interesting... but we're not there yet.

Yes, according to the press release from last month, there is at least a retrofit particulate filter available!
Unfortunately, I can't recall the manufacturer at the moment!
Sure, I'll do it!
Regards,
Manuel.

Hi Albrecht,
You are right about the current differences between Euro 2 and D4 standards.
But what comes after 2005 ? Gruß Ulf

When my flexible pipe broke (on a 1996 VW Golf 1Z G3), a VW dealer told me that I would have Euro 3 emissions if I replaced the pipe and the catalytic converter.
One person knew nothing about it. Their IntraNat PDFs provided no information, only for gasoline engines.
I now have a new one installed (the BX), but it still has Euro2 emissions standards.

I've never heard such nonsense.
The 1Z model with Euro3 is called ALE, and it has a completely different ESP (Exhaust Gas Recirculation), different ESDs (Exhaust Gas Sensors), and also different lines to the injectors. Not to mention a different ECU (Engine Control Unit).
By the way, I used to have the same car, and I also tried to get it converted to meet EU3 emissions standards. This would require a complete overhaul of the engine to bring it up to ALE specifications, which is a complex and expensive process. However, it was questionable whether I would even be able to get these modifications approved and achieve a change in the emissions class, as there is no approval from VW for such a conversion.
When installing a complete ALE drive unit, it's probably not a major problem. Gruß Bertil
