Hello community,

I have a fundamental question about the difference between AFN and AHF TDi engines. The background is that I want to equip my T3 bus with a TDi engine. You often read online that AFN engines are suitable for conversion because the oil pan and the right engine mount of the TDi fit the AFN engine (with the engine tilted 50 degrees to the left). Have any changes been made to the AHF in the area of the oil pan/oil pump/engine block compared to the AFN icon_question.gif? Perhaps someone can help me or has already gained experience with conversions. I would be grateful for any information on the subject new_cry.gif.

Greetings.

The AFN engine is originally from the Volkswagen Golf 3 (as well as other models, but primarily the Golf 3).

The AHF comes from a Golf 4.

Therefore, the engines are generally different!

AFN parts are identifiable by the "028" prefix, while AHF parts begin with "038".

It's definitely clear that more than just the oil pan was changed.

"For example, the entire intake manifold is rotated!"
AFN is on the right, LLK is on the left.
AHF reversed!

That means you will absolutely not be able to perform an AFN conversion using an AHF.

The AHF will direct the charge air in the T3 towards the REAR - which is unfavorable because there's no space for an intercooler there.

Another T3-related point: The AFN engine has an adapter on the valve cover to raise the oil filler neck, and this adapter can be removed.
AHF has integrated the increase into the cap.
This could cause problems with the T3 engine cover.

I personally prefer the AFN.

Greetings.

I agree. The Audi AVG also requires additional work. The AFN engine from the Golf 3 requires the least amount of modification. Even with this engine, the conversion is quite complex and only worthwhile if the transmission is also appropriately long.
Cheers.
