5-hole nozzles or something like 4-port injectors plus the actual ????
...although the latter is probably nonsense .
Why would that be nonsense?
Bosch and Siemens VDO already offer their piezo common rail injectors with the option of seven pilot injection cycles (Alfa currently has five). Several small pilot injections reduce the noise level and can also reduce emissions. Unfortunately, this comes at the expense of power output.

The magnet injectors can deliver up to 5 injections per cycle, while the piezo injectors can deliver up to 7 injections per cycle.
This allows for a multi-point injection system, a separate main injection, and one or two post-injection events (for exhaust aftertreatment, also known as a diesel particulate filter).
But why is Denso now developing another 1800 bar common rail system with solenoid injectors...?
Bosch is launching its piezo injectors and is working on even more pressure (with pressure amplification within the injectors).
In addition, variable nozzles are under development that offer a changeable hole cross-section. Currently, this is achieved by having two rows of holes. One row consists of 'smaller' holes that provide good atomization at partial load, and a few 'larger' holes that can be opened additionally at high flow rates and pressures.
