After a long absence, I have a question for you:
Attached you will find pictures of an ARL piston with approximately 170,000 km on it.
from an engine with significantly enlarged piston dome features, which is also evident from the piston itself.
What I see: Partial adhesion on the top surface, and slight scratches that are only visible upon close inspection.
In my opinion, the piston skirt coating is likely caused by an extremely high fuel injection rate.
with the oil film washed away. Overheating of the omega cavity (see the burn mark above the).
(Bolt holes) No cracks found!
The engine was still running, but it had a crack in the cylinder head and was completely replaced with an automatic transmission, which is why it was ultimately discarded.
The engine block, including the crankshaft mechanism, remains. The connecting rods and crankshaft are in perfect condition!
Now my question: Assuming the piston still meets the dimensional specifications, is it still scrap metal?
Can I reuse it with new piston rings? What do you think about that?

I'd say he's definitely done for, as far as any future prospects are concerned.

Well, I was already planning to use that sentence in the relevant performance level, but I have my doubts about whether that would be a good idea...

Practice makes perfect .
Ich persönlich würde ihn ersetzen, weil der ET Aufwand in keinem Verhältnis zur evt. NaIt's a matter of personal preference.
If he or a replacement engine were to be operated in the same engine block again, I would check the block for flatness and, if necessary, have it resurfaced.

Thanks BM! In your opinion, which is more "critical"? The condition of the graphite coating, or the thermal overload that has already occurred on the material?

These grooves in the graphite coating often occur when the pistons are removed, due to deposits forming in the top of the cylinder above the first compression ring.
I would be more concerned about the thermal stresses that have already occurred.

Who knows when the first crack will appear there or in the recess, although the damage on the outer piston bottom looks more like a minor cavitation damage. However, this does not change the fact that the piston needs to be replaced for the reasons mentioned above.
