Here's another way to put it:

If the refrigerant in the evaporator does not evaporate and instead enters the compressor in liquid form, the compressor is damaged.

Practical tip:
If the air conditioning isn't cooling well, check the dryer vent.
If it has a hot and a cold side, it should be replaced.
