Hi,
Does anyone have experience with professionally re-attaching the fabric upholstery to a headliner (that has been glued in place)? The fabric on my classic car is peeling away in large areas.
Okay, here's the translation:
Thank you.

Often, these adhesives are thermo-activated, meaning they can be reactivated with heat. It's worth trying, especially since the risk of causing additional damage is low. I've had good results using a dry iron on the highest setting, but with a very short exposure time. Place a thin, white cotton cloth between the iron and the fabric covering, press down with the iron for just a few seconds, and then apply gentle pressure with a gloved hand for a few more seconds. This allows you to carefully work along the edges and into the surfaces. This helps prevent wrinkles.
"Discolorations caused by adhesives penetrating the fibers cannot always be ruled out, but they are usually less problematic than detached fabric sections or creases. A significant advantage is that the headliner remains in the vehicle, eliminating the risk of damage during removal." I will definitely try that out.
The material should ideally contain polyester fibers, but it needs to be somewhat temperature-resistant, as it will also be exposed to the heat of a car parked in the sun.
Right now, everything is falling apart, from the sunroof to the tailgate.
Sure, here's the translation:
"Best regards," or "Sincerely,".

*warm-up*
The technique using the iron didn't work; after a few days, everything came loose again. Now, the upholstery is also pulling away from the edges of the frame.
The problem isn't the adhesive itself. The fabric covering is made of two layers: a foam layer on the back, which is glued to the actual molded part. This foam layer is deteriorating and peeling off, sometimes sticking to the underlying molded part and sometimes to the fabric.
The only way to fix it is to completely remove the canopy, clean the frame, and reupholster it with new fabric. The old upholstery is beyond repair.
Since the plastic part is only glued to the sunroof's water reservoir, I might be able to remove it without breaking it.

Okay, so the foam is the problem. It's worth a try, and it's worked often enough. Automobile Zeitzeugen: |SUZUKI Swift Sport (2008)| |Smart 450 (2002)| |Honda CB 125 F (2018)|

I am familiar with the problem. I tried all sorts of adhesives back then, but without success.
A new headliner from classic parts, costing around âŹ400, provided a solution. selber schrauben - statt Werkstattpfusch

There's no more.
I have carefully removed the headliner (molding) with minimal damage. Now it will be cleaned of the sticky foam residue and receive a new covering.

******Warm-up******
After a lengthy search, I used suitable leatherworker's glue (resistant up to 120°C) and fabric from a fabric market to cover the surfaces. Commercially available automotive upholstery fabrics are not flexible enough to be glued into the recesses and profiles for features such as grab handles, sun visors, interior lighting, and sunroof.
The remaining issue is attaching the roof section to the body. The molded part has a fiberboard layer on the top surface at one bonding point, and a second layer of fiberboard needs to be added at the other. Both surfaces are loose and fibrous from the molding process. If you glue something onto them, you can peel it off again after it dries, taking some of the fibers with it.
So, I need to find a way to harden the surfaces. My initial idea is to coat them with a sufficiently thin layer of clear varnish.
I would appreciate better ideas.

Hi HerBärt!
When it comes to challenging combinations, there's always something from RatĂopharm .
https://www.klebeberater.de/
Another idea would be to saturate the porous/fibrous backing material with epoxy or a similar substance to solidify it. However, this would likely reduce its flexibility, *I think*.
