Hello,
First of all, thank you to everyone who has participated in this thread.
I'm sorry, but I cannot access external websites or specific files online. Therefore, I am unable to translate the text from the provided URL.
The 1z was too "unstable" for me (I had already been warned about this).
Therefore, the focus is now on the ASZ engine (96 kW).
It will likely be used in a Golf IV or an A3 8L.
I'm looking for a car in the price range of up to €3000, so preferably closer to the lower end of that range, and with mileage under 300,000 km. The market offers several models with mileage between 220,000 and 280,000 km.
Of course, the years and mileage will have left their mark on the wear items (suspension/bushings/bearings).
I'm specifically interested in the engine:
-Welche bekannten Mängel/Schwächen hat der Motor bei den o.g. Lperformance?
-When should/must the power distribution units (PDUs) be replaced or refurbished?
- I definitely consider the clutch and turbocharger to be wear-and-tear parts.
-Which sensors are prone to failure and produce a "distinct" error pattern?
- FZG (vehicles) should have DPFs (Diesel Particulate Filters): From what mileage should these be serviced or replaced?
The idea is to buy a well-maintained vehicle with minor flaws that can be easily fixed.
Troubleshooting and diagnostic software are available.
I look forward to your replies.
Greetings.
Jan. Audi S2 QP

That's exactly the point. You need a "well-maintained vehicle that hasn't been modified and... most importantly... hasn't been driven excessively."
There are vehicles that are completely worn out and unusable after 200,000 km, while others still look and function quite well even after 400,000 km or more.
I'm looking for a vehicle with the lowest possible mileage, and ideally, one with a known history and previous owner.
Stay away from Vollgas - Spackos vehicles. Cars that have been lowered and widened usually indicate something isn't right... LG, Onkel BM

Hello Jan,
My two cents.
- The ASZ engine is not available with a closed DPF system; it only comes with open systems (the DPF cannot become "full" in this configuration). Depending on your location, the emissions standard may be an issue (sticker requirement).
- With the stated mileage, the cylinder head and PD (positive displacement) elements are definitely not brand new. It is possible that the PD elements in the cylinder head are worn. In the ASZ (as with all 2-valve PD engines), these are attached to one side with a clamping ring and are prone to becoming oval over time.
The ASZ engine is robust and durable, but it's not immortal, especially after 300,000+ kilometers.
-> Either a car with understandable high mileage or, preferably, a newer car.
Best regards, Rainer.

"As these engines age and accumulate mileage, the issue of worn camshafts/lifters becomes an increasingly common problem. Especially for vehicles that have been maintained according to a fixed-interval schedule, I would strongly prefer that!" MfG. Michael

Is the color of the particulate matter sticker important to you?
If so, look for an AXR model. It comes with EU4 and therefore receives a green sticker without any conditions (even without a DPF!). Gruß Bertil

Thank you for the feedback.
@autoservice
Sure, I'll try to keep that in mind. Anything with clear glass rear lights from the accessories will be excluded, just like cheap tuning parts. However, these cars still remain difficult to identify.
The ZR/Wapu (presumably referring to a specific component or system) and some wear items should have been documented or explained.
@Dieselschrauber: I will keep an eye out. Do the cracks appear due to stress fractures caused by vibrations, or due to localized thermal overload?
@ TDI: Do the worn-out glow plugs (if the check engine light hasn't already illuminated) or abnormal engine vibrations become noticeable through other symptoms? This relates to the issue of "hidden defects" that may appear 5000 km after purchase.
"@Bertiel & Dieselschrauber: Unfortunately, the color of the sticker matters (in Stuttgart). A green sticker is good and makes sense because I work in the city and need to enter the restricted zone. If I had a yellow sticker, I would consider retrofitting a DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) to obtain a green sticker. Ultimately, it depends on the condition and price of the vehicle."
Currently, I only find 2 interesting vehicles.

I haven't contacted the VK yet, so I can't provide any more information. Since the car purchase isn't urgent yet, there's no time pressure.
Especially those that are "not roadworthy" can be a real surprise or a great bargain...

Which cracks? I didn't write anything about cracks...
If you need a green sticker, then the ASZ engine without a retrofitted DPF is already not an option.

Sorry, I was reading some older posts at the same time. They often mentioned cracks in the zirconia (ceramic) due to the incorporation of foreign particles.
I connected those two topics in my mind.
We misunderstood each other regarding the sticker. As long as a vehicle can be brought to a "green" status through an aftermarket DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter), that's fine with me.
The AZS comes from the factory in yellow, and with a DPF, it's green, right?
How does the AXM compare to the ASZ in terms of performance and drivability?
Do 100 horsepower suffice for the 1200kg A3?
Sure, it's not going to be a race car, but it should be able to overtake other vehicles quickly on country roads. Audi S2 QP

Okay, my former ASZ engine now has over 450,000 km on it. It's mainly used for long distances, often with a trailer (heavy), and it's frequently driven quite fast. So far, there have been no significant problems. The only major issue I've had, at over 400,000 km, was the dual-mass flywheel (DMS). Of course, there are wear-and-tear items like brakes, timing belt, water pump, one set of shock absorbers, a wheel bearing, and a battery that have needed replacing.
He got the green sticker because the DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) is open, which has been working fine for over 400,000 km (or not, but it hasn't caused any issues).
A good car that has been well-maintained. But, as previous commenters have rightly pointed out, be careful about what you're buying. It's a solid engine if properly cared for, but I don't think I just got lucky.
