Complaint: When driving a Polo V, there is a ticking noise inside the car that changes with the wheel speed.
Results from test drives: The noise is not audible from the outside, either through a window or to an observer. Turning left reduces the noise, while turning right increases it. When the parking brake is engaged while the vehicle is moving, nothing changes. The same is true when applying the service brake for a short period.
Turning the wheels on the raised vehicle shows no abnormalities, only some play in the differential, and almost imperceptible airiness at the rear when changing direction. The front brake pads look good from the outside, but the rotors are worn.
Another test drive, repeatedly applying the service brake with force - the rattling disappears for a short time.
First, the brake pads and disc were removed from the front left. The disc is significantly corroded on the inner side, towards the axle (in some places, the corrosion extends into the contact surface of the pad). Additionally, there is a gap between the pad and the backing plate, and the pad guides are also heavily corroded. On the right side, it looked similar.
The saddle and frame were cleaned as thoroughly as possible on both sides, and new grips and brake discs were installed.
After approximately 10 km of test driving, the noise is still gone.
The tacking likely occurred due to the friction between the corroded, uneven disc.
It seems advisable to periodically verschandeln and re-grease the caliper and frame of the FS-III brake. The parts looked worse than those on my 23-year-old Audi 80. When removing the caliper, the piston must be pushed back, otherwise the caliper with the pads will not slide over the edge of the rotor. I used a C-clamp for this (but it's not easy to get a good grip). To install the lining on the piston side, use a clamp and a piece of wood as a spacer.
