Hello fellow diesel mechanics,

I'm having a problem with my 6-speed transmission. Here's a brief background:

"I left my car at the airport parking lot before my vacation and gave my keys to an employee so they could move it if necessary. Eight days later, I returned from my vacation, tired from the 10-hour flight, and wanted to go home. To my surprise, the first and second gears wouldn't engage properly. After a lengthy discussion, no one seemed to know who was responsible, and I was frustrated and exhausted, so I drove the 150 kilometers home because I didn't have the energy to deal with it. Everything shifted smoothly except for the first and second gears; I had to start in third gear and drive home."

It's a Seat Leon 1M 1.9 TDI with 150 horsepower and a 6-speed gearbox (engine code ARL).

Okay, let's talk about the transmission... the shift cables are fine. When you shift the gears, you can see how the transmission engages them.

It seems to me that the shift rail in the transmission is either broken or damaged in some way, and that's why I can't shift into first and second gear.

I'm now just wondering if I should try to repair the defective part in the transmission myself. I can't find any replacement parts for the internal components of the transmission. I'd rather not buy a used transmission. Besides, if it fails again in the end, it will cost me more money, and there's no guarantee that it will run smoothly.

Could someone possibly give me some advice on how to proceed from here?

Installation and removal should not be a problem; I have all the necessary tools, a platform, and some understanding of the process.

Best regards,
Denis

It's a known issue with the 6-speed transmissions. The shift fork breaks.

Uff, thank you very much. If that's really all there is, then it will be easy. icon_smile_thumb_up.gif

You just saved my day; I was already looking for used transmissions icon_biggrin.gif.

If you can remove the gearbox, you can also install it.
It's best to get a rebuild kit for the gearbox. The (new) shift fork and sealing material won't cost a fortune.
However, I wouldn't remove any more of it, as even a small piece could still cause cavities.
A used gearbox is like buying a pig in a poke; it's bound to have some hidden weakness.

"The 1st and 2nd gears are working perfectly again. I removed and disassembled the transmission, and it was indeed the shift claw that had broken off. I've now reattached it by screwing it, resealed the transmission, replaced the oil, and installed a new clutch and dual-mass flywheel. However, my next problem is that the clutch is slipping. I had this problem before as well; if I kept the clutch engaged for too long on the highway, it would slip for a while, and then it usually worked again after a certain time... Now, with the new clutch, it starts slipping at around 60-70% throttle."
Also, I have to mention that my Leon has been modified and now has approximately 180-190 horsepower.
Since I assume the clutch and dual-mass flywheel (ZMS) are in good condition and yours is "NEW", what else could be responsible? Slave cylinder...master cylinder. I'm not sure exactly where to start to solve this problem permanently. Driving with a slipping clutch is not good, so I can already order a replacement icon_smile_thumb_up.gif.

Hi,
You yourself wrote what is responsible for it.
You either get a clutch that can handle the maximum torque achieved through tuning, or you have to live with using only 60 to 70% of the engine's power.

Best regards from Berlin.
