Audi 8E RS4 Signal for Engine Immobilizer Short to Ground

First of all: I don't know the answer and can only speculate based on the SLP:
The starter appears to be locked by three things:
- Relays for emergency stop J207 (mainly for automatic transmissions)
- Relais 2 for Starter J695 (Position 3, connected to MSG, Pin 52)
- Relays for Starter J53 (Position 4, connected to the MSG, pin 74)

I suspect that if one of the relays fails, this error message in the MSG could appear, because the MSG monitors pin 24 to see if both relays are switching.

Test:
At least, when starting, pin 52+74 must be pulled to ground. Pin 24 must then (through both relays in series) be connected to +12V.

In any case, the car should not be starting at the moment, right?

My assumption is that the "lock" refers to the locking mechanism that prevents the engine from restarting if it has been shut down unexpectedly, thus preventing a second attempt to start the engine.
Could the start button possibly be causing this error? I don't consider replacing it solely on suspicion to be a particularly good idea.

Yes, that's correct. However, you will only have two relays working without automation. Therefore, the relays and the control from the MSG are already okay (perhaps only pin 24 is missing, which is the relay's feedback to the MSG, but this is unlikely.)

What else might be missing? Feedback from automatic start-stop relay to the MSG, pin 23 (but should this even be present without automatic start-stop?). There, however, the specific one is connected with the Start/Stop button.
