Hi there.
Try the next model. In the wiring diagrams, there's a version from 1996 onwards that includes the AHU. The AHU and 1Z are essentially the same.

Good morning!
Here's the translation:

This is for the Passat with engine code AHU, manufactured from 10/1996 onwards.
I hope this helps.

Hello,
On the Audi portal, the wiring diagram for the 1Z model is still available and can be accessed.
Fuel temperature sensor:
The value of -5.6°C is a substitute value (in case of a broken connection).
8-pin connector.
Pin 4 an Pin 33 vom Stg. Mass.
Connect pin 7 to pin 63 on the control unit.
Pin 63: When the ignition is on, check for a voltage between 1.5 and 3.5 volts relative to ground.
Coolant temperature sensor
4-pin connector.
Connect pin 1 to pin 33.
Connect pin 3 to pin 14.
Pin 14, when the ignition is on, measures approximately 1.5 - 3.5 volts relative to ground at 80 degrees Celsius. When heated to 80 degrees Celsius, the voltage decreases to approximately 1.5 volts.
The accelerator pedal sensor and mass airflow sensor are also connected to pin 33.
Best regards.
Michael.

Hello everyone.
Okay, regarding you, Erwin. On the A-pillar, underneath the trim for the hood release, I have a tangled bundle of ground wires. That's where they end. I'm going to pick up the car again shortly and continue searching.
To you, Mr. Know-it-all. Thanks for the information, I'll try again later.

Hi,
The uncertainty regarding the wiring diagrams can be resolved. In the repair manuals (RLF) for the Passat, you can find a vehicle- and engine-specific section titled "Diesel Direct Injection and Glow Plug System." This section explains how to test the temperature sensors and wiring to the MSG (Engine Control Module), including contact assignments for a test box to be used between the MSG and the connector. These contact assignments are consistent with the MSG.
You can use this method to test any wire, including checking for shorts to either the positive terminal or the vehicle's ground.
You can also find the R/T curves of the temperature sensors in the RLF (presumably a reference manual or datasheet).
And please remember that pin 33 is a common reference point for some sensors on the MSG, but it does not necessarily have to be vehicle ground.

I also found information about Herbert, but it only describes the exam using the vag tester. Best regards.

You can easily measure the resistance with a multimeter between the contacts on the MSG connector and the respective sensor.
You don't need a VAG diagnostic tool for that.
