Some T6 models come from the factory with rear shock absorbers that have inadequate damping.
It is important not to confuse inadequate testing with a shock absorber test stand. VW describes the issue in document 2010609/13. The shock absorbers are designed to provide damping primarily at larger deflections, which can give the impression of limited damping.
However, if there are significant differences between the rear right and left shock absorbers, or if the vehicle has very high mileage and the overall damping performance has decreased, then replacing the shock absorbers may be a worthwhile investment.
Replacing the shock absorbers with aftermarket parts is straightforward. It is recommended to tighten the mounting screws of the shock absorber units only when the suspension is compressed, so that the sleeves in the rubber elements of the mounting points are not constantly twisted. They might then be more prone to premature cracking.
The torque specifications for the screws are as follows:
- Top: VAG part number N10209605, tighten from 25Nm to 75Nm, then rotate a further 180°.
- Below are VAG part numbers N10585602 and N10240304. Tighten to 150 Nm and then rotate a further 90°.
